Janty
I have cochins and hybrids. They are lovely and placid but they do like to announce their egg laying to the world. This is Scary Spice, my splash cochin.
half dozen
She is gorgeous!!one of mine is extremely noisy when laying did you get yours at the same age or did you introduce them gradually?
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
I covet a buff orpington but they are super-massive! Just make sure you have the room! I was led to believe it's best to keep hens of the same size in the same housing. So invest in separate housing. Was that what you were planning? Janty
My tiny pekins live with the huge cochins and brahmas. That's out of choice as I let them all out together and the littlies moved out of the eglu into the cube.
half dozen
Hi Anna, we have a cube that we have just put in our 12 foot by 12 foot stable. We have taken all the run off so the girls play all day in stable then come out in garden when we get home. Our girls are quite big so did want big girls to join them! I think they have plenty of room to share with two more x
Snowy
They are both lovely breeds if you don't mind slightly fewer eggs - I especially love the blue and splash colourways
Janty
My cochins were introduced with my original girls but the bantams have been introduced at several stages. My blue cochin is very temperamental when it comes to going broody and egg laying but my splash has laid an egg more or less every day throughout the Summer but I do realise that this is unusual. Daphne
I don't know about cochins but most orps are docile despite their size so if you do go for some I'd keep an eye out they don't get bullied. Having said that I'm probably going to get some layers to go with my orps so I'll be facing the same as you!
chelsea
Im in Devon, if you want to come and visit my cochins you can if you want. I got cochins as I thought they were quiet - they are sooooo not quiet!! They egg announce very loudly, and are prone to broodiness (2 eggs since March). But they are the most gorgeous hens, very submissive with other breeds so I think they will be easy to introduce (if you do it gradually). They are so sweet natured and friendly and make lovely honking noises They do require some attention with feet/leg washing if you are keeping them on muddy ground as they can get muddy clumps built up on their feet. We got our cochins from the Devon Traditional Breed Centre near Crediton, they had white and splash ones there, they were expensive but I think you get what you pay for - I've not had any illness in my pair at all (touch wood) in over a year.
