frenchlayer
Hi All. One of my girls is looking very grey around the face and neck today, her comb is still nice and red and her feet are looking normal colour. It's just around her eyes, cheeks and the wattley bit all look very grey. She is eating well, perky, laid today, I have checked for lice and she has a lovely clean bum . Any ideas? should i be worried, the other 2 look the same as usual. I will go out tonight and check for red mites, but it would seem strange that its just one. Any suggestions gratefully received. theherd123
Not too sure what to suggest here - maybe she is just having an off day - is it just today you have noticed this or has it been a gradual decline in colour around her face? All seems well in terms of her eating drinking & laying etc. which is good news When did you last worm your chookies?
frenchlayer
It's a funny one isn't it. They were wormed about a month ago. I am not sure really, It was just really noticable yesterday. I went out in the dark armed with torch looking for the dreaded red mites, and found none luckily, so I don't think it's that. I have changed their food last week, because I ran out the farm was closed so I got **hide in shame** supermarket stuff because everything else was shut. And they don't like it, so maybe she has just not been eating that, and therefore is being a pig with everything else I put in there. I wizzed up the food this morning and mixed it with water to see if that made it any better, but they are not impressed at all. I was going to say that I was worried because her ear lobes seemed very white against her odd grey face, but in doing a bit of search for ear lobe colour, it's not surprising because she is the only one of the three to lay white eggs, so that's thankfully nothing to worry about. Still very strange.

chelsea
no signs of broodiness? My 2 cochins who have been going broody for a while tend to go very off colour/pale during their stint. just another idea. hope she perks up soon
Seagazer
no signs of broodiness? My 2 cochins who have been going broody for a while tend to go very off colour/pale during their stint. just another idea. hope she perks up soon I'm glad you said this because my Pepperpot has an unusually pale face at the moment but appears very well in herself - apart from being broody again!! I won't panic just yet. Edited to add that I am in the middle of worming them at the moment as well just in case.
Egluntyne
Maybe her hormones have dipped a bit pre-moult. Their faces go pale and the comb and wattles shrink too and laying usually ceases.
frenchlayer
She doesn't seem broody, but it could be moult, I have only had them since may so I wouldn't know. I will see what happens, she has been herself today and eating well, just an odd colour. Thanks to you all. I will let you know whether she moults or not. Christian
I was about to suggest a moult. All 3 of my pure breeds are moulting and my Maran is very pale around the face.
