the hopefulls
We've just had a shock, a greenfinch flew into our window, and by the time we got up to see what was happening there was lots of noise and our girl were attacking the little greenfich the birds feed in our garden all day and the girls just do there own thing, and pick up the bits the birds drop. So why would the girls start attacking an injured little bird? is this normal or do you think they just got spooked by the noise? Any info or feed back would be appreciated. many thanks
Egluntyne
Not very easy to watch, but perfectly normal behaviour I'm afraid. They often attack and devour little fledglings, frogs etc. Edited for typo. Edited September 22, 2008 by Guest
Laura&Sean
Normal behaviour, my children found the hens all attacking a baby bird not long ago, it was a bit shocking at the time but I wouldn't bat an eyelid now I'm afraid. It's just nature and nature is not always nice.

piptiddlepip
Laura's right...a lot of people seems to think that keeping chickens is always fluffy and lovely, and they are gentle creatures who would like nothing more than to cuddle up to you on your bed at night. People forget nature is "red in tooth and claw", and your chook will eat just about anything they can get hold of if it doesn't run away fast enough and isn't too big. They'll often eat mice if they can get them.
