mostin
I get the feeling alot of the tomatoes in my greenhouse are not going to ripen before the end of the season. Does anybody have any good ideas or recipes for what to do with them? thanks

kitbag
FRIED GREEN TOMATOES!! no, seriously, they are delcious lol!! I got the idea from the film!! such a good film... These fried green tomatoes are made with eggs and cornmeal or bread crumbs. INGREDIENTS: 4 to 6 green tomatoes, sliced 1/4-inch thick salt and pepper flour for dusting 2 eggs, beaten cornmeal or bread crumbs bacon grease or vegetable oil PREPARATION: Salt and pepper the tomato slices; dust lightly with flour. Dip slices in beaten egg, letting excess drip off, then coat well with meal or crumbs. Fry in hot grease or oil until browned, turning gently (about 3 minutes each side). YUM!! They are really good!! yay Kitbag xxxxxxxxxxx
mostin
I always wondered if that was real or just for the film. I'll have to try those. I've certainly got enough green tomatoes Thank you.

oniondog
I only just saw this thread, and the green toms are probably no more. But, in case anyone has a glut in the future... We had a similar crop -- lots of beautiful bullet-hard green toms. My OH is a chef, and he has made a HUGE jar of green tomato chutney, from Sarah Raven's Garden Cookbook, (on amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sarah-Ravens-Garden-Cookbook-Raven/dp/0747588708). I was allowed a taste before it was bottled and it was delicious. Thoroughly recommend it -- quite tangy, with ginger and mustard seed etc. It has now been sealed up and I'm banned from touching it for a month or so. I plan on spending Christmas hibernating with a VERY large piece of cheese and said jar of chutney! And there's a delicious recipe for fried green tomatoes in the book Moro East (Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Moro-East-Samantha-Clark/dp/0091917778). So all in all I was quite pleased our tomatoes never ripened! Hope you enjoy them...
Lesley
I picked nearly all our tomatoes yesterday, we have about 5lbs which are already going red and will ripen and about 10lbs of green ones. I still have green tomato chutney left from a couple of years ago so I'm going to try the fried version today..........I've never fancied them cooked like that
