im working on hubby we have a shed at min but im getting fed up of it raining in,

so i just said can i order a cube he said no all it needs is a bit extra felt etc, now i need more advice to convince him we DO need a cube,

what is there size?

can i get a recondition one?

how many chickens can u get in one? (i have 13 chickens)

i wont need the run as i have a built in one any other tips or advice?

Hi Debbie,

 

Don't put felt on the roof as that can encourage red mite (they hide in the gap between wood and felt).

what do those who have it on have on theres? even better if i can talk hubby into getting me one

The wooden coops at my local poultry centre have that corrugated asbestos type stuff on the roof (obviously it's not asbestos but looks like it!)

We have a cube and love it you can/should only have ten chickens in one though

I have an eglu and cube for 12 hens but the eglu sits unused appart from one who lays in there

 

They have a walk in run and free range a lot, but there is plenty of room for them all to roost

I have clear corrugated plastic on my run roof, It's from Wickes & is the "slimline" version at just under £6 a sheet. It took 5 sheets to roof a 6x9 feet run.

 

Some folks have more than 10 chooks in their cube, I think AuntyE does.

I have a cube, only three hens.

I love the cube and so do they.

 

One thing I considered when buying it (as they are NOT cheap) was the resale value.

We hadn't kept chickens before so were slightly sceptical as to whether we'd enjoy it or not (we do).

 

They seem to sell for £500 plus on ebay second-hand.

 

That sold me on the idea (nice fallback) and we've not been disappointed.

 

One tip : Get the plastic roosting bars (think they are standard on new but worth every penny if you need to buy them to add to a 2nd hand one).
