geb0205
Its been some time since I was last here, so a huge HELLO to everyone again! Been to clean the girls out today, and my roosting bars have red mite I'm not very happy. I've been battling against them all summer, cleaning the girls out every 3 days, but once the "Ooops, word censored!"s are in, they are in. Every weekend I hose the entire eglu out and put it all back together, cover everything (including the girls!) in mite powder, but they must be ingrained into the bars. SO... I've just been browsing the omlet shop, having discussed how useful plastic bars would be, and low and behold THEY HAVE PLASTIC BARS!!! BUT, I also saw they now have funky coloured shades... so I could have a purple shade and plastic bars to go with my purple eglu... This leaves me with a dilemma. Having just taken the run apart for the winter, as the girls are only confined when I go away, do I buy just the bars on their own, or do I buy a kit with a purple shade?! Hmmm.... I think I know what the answer is....
Egluntyne
Welcome back. You have been away a long time if you haven't clocked the plastic roosting bars until now! Get some....they are fantastic. So easy to clean. A quick swish and they are done. I would also diatomise everywhere, especially all the nooks and crannies. They sell Daitom in the omlet shop too, so why not add some to your order. Good luck. I'm sure these, plus the cold weather will do the trick.
karlotta
Ooh get the shade AND the bars! You know it makes sense!
Hen Watch
Hmmmmm....... have been wondering the same myself. Do I hint to hubbie that I need plastic roosting bars for Christmas????? The new shades look good but I'm reluctant as my Winter shade bought 18months ago is now in tatters and the shower curtain (less pretty) is a more economic option..... Hmmmm. Ain't Nobody Here
You know the answer to that already . I have the plastic bars now and they're brill! I was just thinking today how the gaps must be slightly wider than on the wooden ones as almost all of the poop seems to fall through to the tray . jomaxsmith
I bought a winter shade recently after they changed the fabric so it hopefully won't disintegrate as fast as the old ones but they only had green then. Oh well. On the red mite issue - if you're hosing them out they will make their way back, they can live without a meal for up to 9 months (I heard) so that gives them plenty of time to crawl back from your blasting. Hen Watch - I use a Tesco Value Shower curtain under the winter and summer shades to fill the gaps and create more of a waterproof tunnel effect! Jo Edited for typo
