Hen Huggers R Us
And it's got quite a big article on page 11 of today's Telegraph. Well done everyone! OMG they have used one of my quotes! I would like to know WHO has informed the press of this oversight! The celebrity chef, who exposed the appalling conditions of battery farms in his television show Jamie's Fowl Dinners, has been forced to change the recipe of his green pesto after shoppers raised concerns. The pesto contains cheese made from an egg product called lyzosyme, which suppliers in Italy failed to ensure was sourced only from free-range hens. Oliver, 33, is patron of charity the Battery Hen Welfare Trust, and earlier this year vowed that "heads would roll" after finding out that one of his restaurants had been serving eggs from battery chickens. The new recipe green pesto sauces – without battery hen eggs - will be available from January. But shoppers reacted with anger after Fresh Retail Ventures, which produces the chef's high street foods after he has developed the recipes, said that the old sauces would remain on shelves until then. Some visitors to Oliver's own website have called for the jars to be recalled or re-labeled to show they contain battery farmed products. "There are still millions of jars out there on the shelves of supermarkets and I feel the general public are being misled as I was," one wrote. "I am so disappointed. The products should never have been on the shelf in the first place if Jamie feels so strongly about battery hens. I'm shocked," commented another. A spokeswoman for Fresh Retail Ventures said that it had now warned its suppliers that battery farmed eggs were "not acceptable". A spokesman for Oliver said: "The egg product in the pesto is lysoztyme, which is traditionally used as preservative in Italy during the production of Grana Padano cheese. It exists in the pesto in a tiny quantity. "The pesto containing egg lysozyme is no longer in production and Fresh Retail Ventures has been working urgently to change the recipe to use a different cheese without egg lysozyme. " Oliver has spearheaded a number of campaigns to improve the quality and ethics of the British diet. His drive to rid school canteens of unhealthy food - Turkey Twizzlers were a particular target - led the Government to pledge an extra £280 million to improve food standards. His attempts to improve the eating habits of the entire town of Rotherham in South Yorkshire were the subject of a recent Channel 4 series, and his latest campaignwill be devoted to improving the welfare of Britain's pigs. Oliver's range of branded products includes olive oil, sauces, salads and sun-dried tomatoes. Jamie Oliver's green pesto is sold for £2.49 in supermarkets. Guest
it's a public forum, they probably found this thread. Didn't someone post earlier that they were a journalist?
Guest
I recognised your quotation! They seem to have got the info from Jamie's website and I guess it could be a website monitored by the press for latest outrages etc, especially with Rotherham currently on TV
Christian
it's a public forum, they probably found this thread. Didn't someone post earlier that they were a journalist? Yes the journalist left a phone number - the post was removed by the Mod team.
Hen Huggers R Us
Oh dear, I really didn't want this to happen, poor Jamie has had enough grief from the press lately. I just wanted the company to recognise what they had done, and quietly rectify the matter immediately. Now it seems he is getting slated for this as well. I have been told "from my source" that he was fully aware of the egg product in the Pesto, once I had brought their attention to it and was definately NOT HAPPY He pays these people loads of money to do their research properly as he doesn't have the time himself, someone may be for the chop for this oversight, I fear..... Guest
I don't think the article particularly puts Jamie in a bad light. He is quoted as saying "Heads will roll" over a far worse oversight - battery eggs in his restaurant. This is an innocent mistake I would guess by someone who didn't realise egg products had been used in preserving the cheese. He'll survive! Guest
and the good thing is, more people now know about the bad eggs in his pesto so can avoid buying it. You haven't done anything wrong, the truth is best out there. Hopefully it sends a message to other manufacturers that continue to use battery eggs. It's a positive thing as far as I'm concerned. The Dogmother
I just did an internet word search on 'Jamie Oliver pesto' and this forum was one of the results, so don't beat yourselves up guys. They probably had some sort of lead or idea and were doing research to pad it out. I used to be married to a journo and they research stories all the time, a very small percentage of that speculative research actually gets to press.
