Guest
1 last question, what size is the smallest tub trug pls?
Christian
A small is a 14 litre. One last point about vaccinations, many of them are given a dose at day old, up to 12 weeks. Some vaccinations have to be done at certain times. i.e day old, 3 days, 4 weeks etc.

Louisdog
I'd second what Christian said, I think that the vaccination is usually given at something like a day old, and you can only buy it in bottles to treat say 1000 chicks! I also have had a lot of purebreeds and never lost one to a condition which they could have been vaccinated against. I was just on the phone to Wernlas too! They never mentioned vaccinating their stock, but I didn't ask them. I have just ordered 4 new bantams from them So will soon also be going through the trauma of chicken introductions, we'll have to compare notes! Guest
hey alex that's exactly what our vet said (about them being produced in batches of 1000) we phoned them aswell just to dble check. They've been so great with our girls so far and even asked after shalott (she had peritonitis recently). Anyway, we introduced a cple of new girls recently, we kept them seperate for a week letting them free range then putting them away and letting the old girls free range and eventually letting them free range together. After a week, they slept together at night and we seperated them during the day for a few days. Then we mixed them togetjer in the run. It all took about 2-2 1/2 weeks but they're all living together now quite happily. Maybe we were just really lucky but we didn't have any major kerfuffles, good luck with your girls, if you take it gently I'm sure you'll be okay
Louisdog
Hi Poet Thanks, yes fingers crossed it will be. But I have had terrible trouble in the past introducing new birds. Although it has also gone really well at times too. Maybe it's luck / the temperament of the individuals involved! The best intro we had was when we hatched three eggs, as the chicks grew up they naturally became part of the flock. I'll do similar to you, have them separate but nearby, then separate in the day and together at night, etc. BTW my newbies will be quite young, about 13 weeks, how about yours? Cheers Alex P.S. Your vet sounds great. Our excellent small animal practice turns out to be abysmal with chickens but I have finally found a brilliant chicken vet, it's great when you find one isn't it. He even operated on one of ours!
Guest
we must have been really lucky Our new girls are 20 weeks old. Nikki said we could have either her caramel coloured Plymouth Rocks (which were beautiful but more expensive), or 2 of her Buff Rocks which were a bit cheaper. As we're not particularly bothered about what they look like, we've gone for the Buffs. Can't wait to pick them up at the weekend
Louisdog
Buff is a lush colour anyway. We had a buff pekin, called Buffy! I have to wait until 1st November for mine, lucky you getting yours so soon!
Guest
I'd forgotten all about names! Ian's got his Beatles song book out now. I'm thinking Martha and Prudence Ian's contributions were sexy sadie, or polythene pam and penny lane!
Louisdog
Martha's a lovely name - might have to pinch that for one of our newbies Two of ours will be the same, I might call them Henny and Penny!
Guest
one of Ian's other suggestions (keeping The Beatles theme) was Honeypie which I thought was lovely, considering their colouring! I think it's going to be Martha and Prudence though, Martha is a lovely name, it was the name of Paul McCartney's dog (the song is named after his dog) Here's a bit of trivia for you, Roger McGough had one of Martha's puppies. He got a couple of young girls knocking on his door one day and thinking they were after his autograph, he got his pen ready but they'd come to swoon over Paul McCartney's dog's dog!!!!
