4m x 3m Omlet pen, cube, new auto door still boxed and coop light

Just went out to lock the girls up for the night and noticed Gwendolyn's lost a toe nail, and cut her foot. She was bleeding a little bit, so I brought her in...bathed her foot and put some flour on it so stop the bleeding. I'm sure she'll be ok - pretty positive she's done it today when she was digging (like a mad woman) for worms!

 

She's back in her wee house with her sisters - in the dark, snuggled up and sleeping. I'll keep an eye on her tomorrow to ensure she doesn't open the wound again. I don't want the others pecking at it!!

 

Anyone else had experience of this?

 

My poor wee girl! Got a couple of cracking pics of her cuddling up to the oven for a heat though!! Every cloud has a silver lining!

Oh dear, poor wee thing . Sounds like you're doing all the right things. I'm sure I've seen other Omleteers (or their hens!) with similar injuries which have all healed fine.

im sure she will be fine. As ANH says above other forum members girls have had cuts and grazes and recovered. Keep an eye on the wound and bathe/clean again if necessary.

Yeah, my logical mind tells me she'll be fine. I'm sure she's wripped it off whilst digging for worms (perhaps caught it on the weldmesh under ground, or something), but it's not hard to flap over nothing when one of your girlies shows ANY sign of discomfort!

 

I'll bathe it tomorrow, and just ensure no infection sets in. Hopefully she'll grow her nail back, if not...she'll be easy to spot!!

 

I'll just have to give her extra treats tomorrow...lol. Any excuse!!!

Hi sparkysmum,

 

Yes, our girls are all salmon faverolles. They look very alike, but I can easily tell the difference. Gwendolyn is much fatter, and heavier!! (Plus, she's a drama queen...screams at anything!!).

 

They are an extremely easy breed to look after - very very very docile and friendly. They enjoy cuddles and kisses just as much as our dogs and cats!! She's only 17 weeks, so should almost double in size (only drawback if you've a tiny garden).

 

I would highly recommend the breed - I couldn't be without my girls now! Plus, they are good winter layers...which is always a bonus!!

 

I've put another pic here for you to see all three of them - Euphemia is the one being trampled by Henrietta (right) and Gwendolyn. It looks like I'm pinning them on my knee, but believe me...they fight for attention!!

Thanks for the foties Bephlan. They are soooooooooooooooooooo beautiful. Will have to see some in the flesh (or rather feather!). Thinking about aquiring a couple more hens in the spring & they would def. be a possibility. Allison

One thing to keep in mind with them though - they are very docile, and as such can be victims of bullying with other hens. So, be sure you introduce them well...and try not to put them in with a breed that will beat them up!!!
