Introducing a new chicken

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am thinking of adding 1 pol chicken to our flock of two - I have seen a gorgeous yellow and black one at local farm place - I think it is a buff sussex. Could someone please point me in the right direction for the guide to introducing new chickens - I can't seem to find it on the website. Any of your own advice would of course be very welcome too!

I was advised not to add 1 chook to 2 chooks.. at least add 2 chooks.

I recently added 2 chooks and it was a bit hairy at first I wouldn't like to have just added 1. I think there's a section under FAQ's about adding POL's to an existing flock.

If I were to do it again I would have gone for 3 chooks... The amount of time and effort involved in introductions.. you might as well do a few at a time.

Anyway good luck.. if you have anymore questions definately ask.. there is always very good advice on here.

I added 2 to 2 and did it very slowly as per the advice on the excellent threads. I wouldn't in all honesty add 1 to 2. My optimum number at the time was 3 but i ended up with 4 for this reason and am very glad i did. i added an extension to the eglu run and they ranged a lot anyway so it was fine once they had settled in - about 3 weeks... :D

Thank you all for the excellent advice. I'm so glad you all said add two because I actually did see two I wanted and now can tell my husband that you all think we should get two more too! I think it will be after xmas now so it gives me time to get an extra house sorted and buy some gentian violet. If I'm not careful I can see me accidently buying another eglu and ending up with 8 girls! It certainly is addictive this chicken keeping. Thanks again for the advice - the articles are excellent. All the best

Oooh, if you're going to get an extra house definately get more than two new ones :D Four is a nice number :D

Seriously though we've introduced two that were already laying to six. They were integrated within a couple of weeks and more recently we've added four 12 week olds. That took longer obviously but they're all settled now, with just the odd bit of pecking.
