I recently completed what I thought was a successful introduction with Georgina, and a new point-of-lay chicken (Betty). There have still been a couple of squabbles each day, but no major damage. I got home yesterday and it looked like WW3 had broken out - feathers all over the run. On closer inspection, the feathers seem to be Georgina's (Betty is pure white) and Betty doesn't have any bald spots or obvious damage. Georgina's about 18 months old, and I thought that she had already moulted this year, and that they only moulted in the summer. Georgina hasn't laid for a couple of weeks, which I thought was just a protest at having Betty in her run, but now I'm wondering if it could be a moult, even though it's freezing outside!! Any ideas?

At least one of mine is also moulting - feathers in eglu and outside in free range area and its so cold at this time of the year too!

I have a light sussex who is currently moulting - for about the third time this year!

 

When she isn't moulting she's broody

 

That bird does not earn her pellets....I hear light sussex are "good for eggs & good for the pot" Well the eggs aren't working out.............

thank you - couldn't see it for looking i think!! Will hope that it's just a moult, and that Betty is not going to come out bald and bruised one morning..

I've got a moulting gingernut at the moment - if you can't see any damage, and if there are lots of feathers in the run, I'd guess it is a moult. Usually when the little darlings peck each other, they eat the feathers ...

I've got a few threadbare girls at the moment, and one in particular is a sorry sight indeed.

 

You do have to question their timing don't you.

Oh boy ready for the pot is what mine looks like to-day - bald bum and legs and bald round the neck too. I must say it must be so so cold as its windy and not very warm here. Lots of porridge and poultry spice etc just now.
