Hello everyone! I want to introduce my cochin girls to the older girls in another month or so but what do I do about food they will be getting up to POL but being pure breeds I dont think they will lay till next year.So do I put them on layers pellets with other girls? Or do they have to stay on growers pellets? seems a bit tricky if you want to merge them all into one big chicken family

I was told by the breeder to put my growers on to layers from 18 weeks old so that's what I did. It also coinicided with me running our of growers pellets. HTH

So I dont have to wait until they start to lay before going onto layers???

No they are OK going onto layers from 18 weeks

they should be on growers till they're about 18 weeks. In practice I leave my growers on growers until the sack has run out and then I merge the youngsters with a main flock - and if possible I then give layers/growers mixed 50/50 for a week or two. If the sack ran out at say 16 weeks I would buy small quantities to last 2-3 weeks (mine are all pure breeds). Its fine to put your nearly POL/18 week+ youngsters on layers now even tho they probably won't lay until next year.

I put my Hogwarts girls onto layers at 18 weeks, even though they are not yet laying. The sack of growers was empty, and I saw no point in buying another.

 

I gave them half and half for the last week.
