ucadex or bumper bits?

Recommended Posts

Having tried both, I wouldn't hesitate to go straight for bumpa bits. Ukadex nearly made me pass out and vomit at the same time. And the thought of having to do it regularly was too much to bear. The bumpa bits were instantly successful for me and had the advantage of staying on for 6 months. Oh and 10p was quite good value.

I agree. I faffed about for a fortnight, firstly leaving them to 'sort themselves out' and hoping it would be quick. Then, when blood was drawn, isolating the no1 chook in a dog crate for 5 days - which just allowed no2 chook to take her place.

My bumper bits arrived on Thursday, I put one on no1 that night, before returning her to the Cube, and all has been peace and harmony since.

I admit I didn't try Ukadex, but the write ups on here didn't inspire me to rush into it.

I have to say I had the opposite problem. My bully girls had trimmed beaks and the bumper bits did reduce the pulling but not the pecking and blood drawing. Ukadex was a huge success and worked brilliantly straight away.

Who's to say you can't use both?

I have to say the Ukadex smell really didn't bother me but having worked in a hospital with lots of 'strong' odours I suppose I'm immune

Got my bumper bits from Sue Hammon at Wernlas. They are 10p each so I sent her a SAE and a book of 4 first class stamps, and she sent me the bumper bits with some typed instructions by return of post.

It was surprisingly easy to fit - Shaun recommended 'circlips pliers' to open up the bumper bit, and this made it quite easy to slip into her beak. When the pliers were released, the end pieces slotted straight into her nostrils.

do you know anyone who fixes bikes or cars? they'll probably have a pair of circlips, I borrowed mine off a friend ( must return them, they're still in the kitchen drawer!) and they made it much easier.

Be firm, my biggest mistake was being a bit too tentative - get a good firm grip on your chicken's head and don't be scared, they're tougher than you think!
