Madbird
Brought my hens home on Sunday, however have noticed over the last day, a couple of them sound a bit... er.. 'snotty'... Is it just the stress of the move do you think? Is there anything I can do to make them more comfortable and help boost their immune system? Also, a second question - is shredded paper ok to use as a nesting material? Edited November 12, 2008 by Guest
Egluntyne
Citricidal is very good for snuffly hens. They might need a bit of a nose wipe with warm salty water now and then. If it becomes green......it might be worth a trip to the vets. Look out for a rattly chest too.

Hen Watch
I have used citricidal in the past with good effect, but it is worth keeping a close eye on their progress. I have always used Auboise (hemp based horse bedding) in the nest box and found it great. You can used shredded paper (not too long though) in the box. I tried this for a 2 month period recently as I thought perhaps one of my chooks was allergic to Auboise, but I found that my chooks ate most of the paper. I know they peck and eat everything new at first, but this carried on for ages, so I have gone back to Auboise. Either way, both compost well.
