quinlan
Was just after some advice... Two of my girls have been laying for couple of weeks now. Yesterday there was a very pale speckeldy egg in the nest box (usually the eggs are brown) then today there was a softie first thing and an hour later a smaller than usual egg which is also very thin shelled. Could it be the other girls beginning to lay or could there be something up with one of the regular layers? And do I need to rush out and get limestone flour (i usually put crushed eggshells in with their porridge pellets) They eat pleantl of pellets, have grit, free range and also get a few greens thrown in (and the occasional handful of corn) Any advice would be great thanks. Egluntyne
Sounds like the firstattempts of one of the other girls to me. It sometimes takes a few goes to get it right.
quinlan
I've just let the girls out and Didier came out of the nestbox looking very uncomfortable. She layed a pale soft looking egg in the run and witin a few minutes, still lookink hunched up layed another pale egg which broke. Shes always laid nice brown eggs.... Whats wrong with my girl? Is it just a case of needing limestone flour or is it something more serious? I though chickends only laid one egg a day so am guessing she must be feeling very wrong poor thing... Help please! Egluntyne
I wouldn't worry just yet. It really does take a little while for their egg laying tackle to settle down. I would give them minimum treats and keep them in the run till early afternoon so that they tank up on pellets and not "junk food" for a few days. That will make sure that they get enough nutritious food to help the egg laying.
quinlan
Thanks Egluntine, Didier did lay lay a normal egg today, I already did what you suggested re no treats and keeping them in til the avo and it seems to have worked. I'd been giving them greans every day, like cabbage, brocilli and spinach so I must have been giving them too much. Thanks for your advice!
