Olly
Not for me, I was taught by my mother while still at primary school! My niece, aged 22, has asked for a book for Christmas on learning to sew - she said she'd like to start making her own clothes. She's quite arty and very fashion-conscious, and I can see her getting into this - can anyone recommend a good 'starter' book? She doesn't have a sewing machine, although she can probably borrow her mum's. I've looked on Amazon but it's hard to gauge what would be good. I just thought maybe some of you are beginners and have used a good book that you could recommend? (I think she is hoping to do clothes rather than embroidery/stitchcraft.) TAJ
I would highly recommend the Readers Digest 'New complete guide to sewing - step-by-step techniques for making clothes and home accessories' I got mine on Amazon. It is really clear and detail and I think a must have for a beginner or those more experienced - it is clear and well illustrated. My daughter had some homework related to patterns this weekend - she couldn't find any of the information she needed on the net, but this book had all the answers and illustration to explain it all. There is a whole chapter on this book explain about patterns and pattern markings, how the adjust size on patterns, etc. Tracy
Olly
Funny you should say that, because I have that book, version circa 1981, and I was thinking that it's probably the best book I have on that ... I think that's why I've hung on to it for 27 years! Thanks Taj, I might look at that.
