Well, if you already have 2 laying farmyard eggs,go for some colour :P:P:P

 

The white hens look really nice in the run too, by the way - they sort of stand out amoungst the gingers,greys & blacks.

Don't be put off by how they look when you go down to your medowsweet man - they lok a bit odd when they are young,but soon grow a wonderful tail & massive comb!

Ella Fitzgerald and Cleo Laine, by any chance? If so, do you like their namesakes' singing (how can one not like Ella?) or is it tongue-in-cheek? :)

 

Yep, the very same although they're pretty quite on the singing front, unlike some of the girls on the forum I believe! I do like their nameskes' singing, my kind of music. I'm a sort of amateur musician - play clarinet and saxophone (clarinet in a concert band and sax in a big band). My favourate chook is no reflection on the singer though!! She's just a bit friendlier and scatty but I love them both really!

Struggled for names at the start but then just came to me Ella seemed good for the pepperpot and Cleo for the gingernut. Intending on keeping the theme going with perhaps Nina and Alreatha for the new girls. Not sure if those names would necessarily suit a white star or amber star though. Any suggestions?

ps Cleo is now looking a lot better since her double egg job. She's eaten some sweetcorn and half a tomato. Just need to try and get her to drink some water.

Hey, are you on commission??? You're making the choice even harder!! It has to be said they do look good and white eggs.....

 

Still have until the end of the month to decide, although the meadowsweet lady did say if I wanted the white star I would have to order as they don't keep them due to their houdini characteristics :D

 

Will let you know my decision. Bit daunted at the about the introductions to my two but loads of posts on the forum with good tips on that front so good advice readlily available.

I'd be interested in The Managing Directors experience of the Heritage though, both with humans and other chooks. Maybe the breeders just had a particurly unsocialble bunch of skyliners! May change my mind back again I was also looking for a white egg layer too! They are lovely looking girls though.

we have had Sorrel (heritage skyline)10 days now and she is lovely she is a bit shy but my 8 year old can catch her and there is no problem getting her back in the run, she certainly knows people mean treats too. She went in with Willow and the other new girl Daisy and has been fine, when they are all out she has been fine in fact here she is bonding with Briar

Sorrel is on the right but apart from their heads they are hard to tell apart, so much so that Murdo ahs been known to get them in the wrong runs

I would say that Sorrel is less shy than Blossom the white star although she is not too bad these days (except she has taken a dislike to poor Daisy), have to say the omlet hens were a lot tamer from the start than our other new girls the sweetest natured of ours is Bramble she would sit on your knee if she could, the shyest by far is Jasmine but then she 's not really laying and they all clam down when they come in to lay so I'm told

 

Daisy is very placid too and a great layer (best layer probably the white star though)

 

so there you are lots more information to add to the mix, good luck choosing them

I did think about a white star but have been advised by lots of people that they are very flighty and difficult to contain. Do you have any problems with this?

Have to say, I'm finding choosing a couple of new chickens very difficult and keep changing my mind. There's so many I'd love to have but not enough space!

I also have a white star - predictably named by one of my boys as Snowy. She is lovely. Yes, a bit skittish but very friendly with lots of character. I've had no problems at all with her - she has been very easy to deal with. I have only had her a couple of months and in that time she has become one of our family favourites!

Our Whitestar Poppy, is a lovely friendly bird. She is so nosey and full of character. We can pick her up easily although she can run fast. She is greedy and so will come for any treats and, once laying, was quite happy to be picked up.

 

Our Skylines are still not laying yet.

Thanks for all your posts on white stars and skyliners. So much information and now having another rethink and brain hurting. I thought I had decided! The white egg amongst the brown ones in Sarah's picture does look good. Are the eggs tasty too?

 

Lesley -are your skyliners friendly? May be tempted again by the skyliners after the MDs post.

Hi Elaine - the Skylines seem quite friendly - and will become more so when they start laying. Using sweetcorn to hand feed chickens does help :wink:

 

We had one big, blue egg today :shock:8) It is slightly more blue than the duck egg and the Cream Legbar egg

 

Maybe the breeders just had a nervous or unsociable batch then. They definately wouldn't come anywhere near humans, even when offered with some grain they just huddled in the corner.

Blue egg sounds fab :)

It could also be that they had just arrived & were still unsure of their surroundings & shell shocked from the transport there.

Panic breeds panic in chickens - so you only really need a couple of nervy ones in a flock to make the whole bunch go scatty :lol:

 

Good point. I got the impression that they they were not brand new arrivals and had been there well over a week. That said I remember it did take 2-3 weeks before my girls really began to settle down and start to do the chicken thing of scratching and destroying the grass!

Re Skylines laying white eggs.... found this when trawling through the Practical poultry forum. Interesting and may explain a lot.......

 

"Hi, I'm a Meadowsweet agent and was given a sampling batch of 2 of these "Skylines". I was really chuffed. I had requests from customers and so bought another batch - this time 10 birds. Anyone who bought them was told that I couldn't guarantee a blue egg but up to 3 from 10 would or could lay a white/off white egg. I was then informed that a batch of a new white egg layer was available, some were spare and did I want them. I said yes and went to collect. Then I was told they looked like Skylines. The batch of 10 I bought looked different from these and different from the first two birds. I was also informed that they were being sold as the white egg layers so I should take them home and wait and see. They are white egg layers, and a brown leghorn hybrid. Look at the Partridge Brown bird on Good Life Poultry's website. These are they or at least very similar. The 10 Skylines I had (only 4 left I'm afraid) are laying their first eggs. I've had 3 BLUE eggs so far. I want to hang on to these 4 and make certain I am getting a blue egg from each.

 

I can only say that you ought to contact Meadowsweet direct and let them know. Either they have been given the wrong birds at the rearers or they've made a mistake when giving them to their agent. I have also heard that a small number of the Brown Leghorn hybrids were being reared with the Skylines and mistakenly sold as Skylines. Joyce "
