Hi - I wrote a few weeks ago about the straw being kicked around so there is none left in the nesting box but now it is driving me crazy. I put more in every day and as soon as Gabriella ( i have watched and it is always her) goes in she kicks it out - it goes right out in the run. Today I put some more in straight away but in a minute she had done it again! Tess has started laying though so not sure what to do....

 

any ideas?

Hi What about using something else I like lots of us used shredded paper but it got wet if the hens were wet. I now use hemcore - no chucking it around or getting wet Straw looks nice and nesty but other materials are just as good or better. Allison

I use Aubiose. Lovely and comfy for them.

 

I found straw went manky, compacted and cold.

I've just switched to aubiose in the nestbox as well - same problem as you. It doesn't get kicked out and somehow its easier to clean as well.

I usually use Hemcore, but we had some straw which is a bit too rough for our hamsters so thought I'd give it a try in the chickens house. They did not like it one bit! They almost ran away from it, and it was all pushed away from where they sleep in the roosting boxes. Needless to say we've stuck with the Hemcore.

Thanks - i would love to get auboise/ hemcore/ easibed but cannot find any local suppliers of any of them! Anyone use internet suppliers who can deliver? Thanks!

It is a massive bale so the delivery cost would be huge I would think. Try a search for local equestrian shops, as they all sell some form of horse bedding
