DW
I've been using the herbal option - Vermex, for 3 days every month. To good effect, so far (i.e. no evidence of worms). Why do so many people prefer to use Flubenvet????
alexgirl73
Quick question on this subject. How on earth do I worm 8 girls? When we just had the 3 it was easy to give them half a grape each, you could easily make sure they all got their piece. But with having the 8 girls now I have no idea how to do this. The 3 newbies all look identical to me (which is why they are just called chook chook lol) and I wouldn't be able to tell who had had and who hadn't. Help!! Happy chickens!
I was wondering about Vernex too - sounds more natural, but the old thread above doesn't mention it. Advice from some eggsperts would be great!
chelsea
vermx is a more natural wormer I think, I dont think it was on the market when we first got our chooks so we have used nothing apart from flubenvet. What worries me with vermx is that I've seen several members on here who have used it and then found their chickens have worms and have then had to go and buy flubenvet to clear them so bit of a false economy and hassle IMO. SnowWhite
I tried Vermex at first because I liked the idea that it was organic and I could put it the water and let them get on with it. At first I was happy with Vermex, I did not see any worms, but I had a feeling that the girls weren't on top form and we were getting a few too many runny poos. So I got the 240g tub of Flubenvet from petmeds after much discussion with the OH who was deeply opposed to using chemicals. I dosed up the food as described and fed them like that for 7 days. The Flubenvet on a grape option just isn't feasible for my lot, none of which have manners and will snatch anything from you the second they see it. I have to say that I have been amazed at the results. I have noticed a real difference in the girls, not least that two more have started to lay. We have virtually no runny poos either. So while I applaud the Vermex organic option, Flubenvet actually works. I think you have to have used them both to see the difference. It is also cheaper. I paid £20 for the small pump bottle of Vermex which I should use monthly. I reckon it'd last 3 months. The Flubenvet I bought will medicate 200kg of food and I'll only use it every 2-3 months. It cost £16.00.
Happy chickens!
That's very interesting, but worrying. Had hoped to be able to trust Omlet - they say Verm-X for chickensVerm-X is a 100% natural pellet for free range chickens that is ideal for controling all known parasites in chickens such as worms. Verm-X Pellets are ideal for chickens kept or following organic farming methods Being a 100% natural herbal formula there is no need to stop using the eggs whilst treating your hens. On this very website selling the stuff! Is there any way of knowing if it really works?
Egluntyne
I have used Vermex and wasn't impressed. My hens still got worms. The first time I gave them Flubenvet, it was a revelation. I haven't eaten noodles since. I give my girls Flubenvet every 3-4 months. I use the food dosing method as I haven't the energy to sort out 17 squabbling hens fighting over grape halves. I always end up with some overdosed and others not treated with that method. There is no egg withdrawal with Flubenvet either, at the normal dose. DW
How would I know if my hens have worms?????
The Dogmother
Often you won't know, which is why preventative dosing twice a year is recommended. Signs could be worms in poo, los of condition or diarrhoea
