Hi everyone,

 

Here is a pic of a chicken which has been given to me. We think it is a Brahma but is too small for the description. Someone suggested that it may be a minature. Anyone any ideas? Also, if you can identify it, can you tell me wheather it is likely to get on with my Miss Pepperpot who is about twice a big as her! So far all she has done it peck her! Poor thing! Thanks.

Markings wise she looks a lot like my Ruby who is a Black Rock but there are a few breeds that look like that. Her comb looks tiny so I'm guessing she's still a baby and may yet grow bigger.

Doesn't look like a brahma to me. She looks like she has feathery legs and you mention that she seems like a miniature...could she be a pekin cross? Difficult to tell without another hen to compare her with sizewise.

Thanks for suggestions. I agree, she does look more like a pekin. I will try to take another photo tomorrow with Penny on it. I know my neighbour has had her for at least 6 months but don't know how old she was when they got her. Do you think Penny will eventually get on with her or would she be better off with others of a similar size? I did want to adopt some ex bats but a hear they can be quite competitive - wouldn't want her to get hurt.

Just taken some new snaps of Penny and Dot. Neither are very happy about being kept in the run but with the fox about a don't feel safe letting them out. Hopefully you can get a better idea of ner size now. I have been looking at a few pictures of Pekin's and think that is what she is. Thanks for your help.

Have seen some pictures of Cochins today and she looks a bit like them. What do you think?

Personally I think she's a Pekin, she has that little round tail.

When I got my pekins I thought she looked like a cochin, they are kind of like minature versions of cochins, if she's smaller than you're pepperpot then I don't think she will be a cochin as they are very big birds. but I could be proven wrong...

Cochins and pekins are slightly similar. In parts of America I have read that pekins are known as cochin bantams but there is no connection between the two. I don't think your girl is a cochin.

I have cochins, they appear very "round" hens- especially in the chest area. They are quite tall aswell, I agree with Janty I think your girl looks "pekiny" to me..

What can I say...I'm a sucker for a fluffy bum.

That's why we have pekins, brahmas and cochins.

 

My twelve year old son has two RIR minis and I can't take to them at all .

 

They look like moor hens to me.

Ok, I will go with the majority and assume she is a pekin. She is not laying at the moment and we know she is at least 6 months old. Can anyone tell me when she is likely to lay and frequency of eggs? Im assuming they will be small eggs? Does anyone keep pekins with hybrids?

I wouldn't expect her to lay until Spring but she may surprise you.

 

One of my pekins lays quite frequently but one lays one egg a week and that's when she feels like it. You always know when Nugget has laid an egg because you will find her fast asleep under a bush somewhere. On average though, my pekins lay two to three eggs a week. They are small eggs but very tasty. We like ours poached.

 

I keep pekins mixed with hybrids, large breeds (cochins and brahmas), RIR minis, etc. They all get on well and the pekins chose to abandon their eglu and move into the cube with the large girls and a few hybrids. The bantams always go to bed first so that they get the nesting box and don't get trampled by the others. It's quite sweet watching them in their little routine.

 

Popcorn, my lavender pekin will not share the cube nesting box when she wants to lay and she will stand at the top of the ladder and 'shout' until the hybrids, cochins or whatever are in the nesting box leave. She is a madam.
