Tiggy
i have a meter square plot left at the end of my raised bed and I was thinking about planting some asparagus crowns, but am unsure about how high I need the raised bed to be
Redwing
My friend has a smashing asparagus bed, going on her experiences I would make it a foot deep just to be on the safe side, certainly no less that 25cm
Lesley
Ours is in a raised bed - about 12" deep.

Matthew
Asparagus roots are pretty deep (up to 4' apparently!!!) So if the beds arent on soil you may have an issue... the crowns should be about 8-10" deep, as you need to ensure that when cuitting the spears below surface you are clear of the crown and root structure
malcolmS
Is Asparagus quite easy to grow..stick in the ground and then wait. I understand it takes 1-2 years to get established? anything else i should be aware of? Malcolm
chickencam
I prefers a lighter soil. Make sure that you buy good healthy crowns, we bought some cheaper ones from Wyevale and they didn't really come to much. Make sure that the area in which they are to be planted is free from perenial weeds, we have had dreadful problems with bindweed in ours. The first season you leave it alone , second season only pick a few spears then by the third season you can pick for about a month. If you love asparagus it is well worth growing, the spears when freshly picked are really sweet and only take about 2-3 minutes to steam, or can be eaten raw, but even by the next morning they are much tougher and take more like 6 minutes to steam. chickenanne
I really fancy growing asparagus, but how much space does it need? And I guess it's going to need full sun...?
