Groovychook
Thought you lot might be able to share your wisdom with me! My Mum is thinking of treating herself to a Nintendo Wii to help her to get fit following her heart bypass surgery in May of last year. She turned 70 on Boxing Day so would need a fairly gentle level of exercise to begin with. Do you think it would be a good thing for her to try and are they easy to operate?! It's a lot of money to spend if it's not going to get much use...
Mutrix Farmers
My parents have one and they are both 66. Mum suffers from angina and Dad has a dodgy leg. Both have hign blood pressure. Lots of the activities can be played while sitting down. They're really simple to operate, full instructions come with each activity and there are training sessions with each to improve technique. The machine always comes with Wii sports which is tennis, 10-pin bowling, golf and some others, and then there is a whole host of other games to buy. We like golf so have a Tiger Woods PGA Golf Tour. We find it's not just about the physical activity, we spend all our time laughing when we play as a family, so there's a feel good factor too. And it's something Mum could do with the grandchildren (Son loves playing against Grandad). Some nursing and residential homes have them for the residents. Ask around, one of your friends may have one you can borrow.
Groovychook
Thanks for your comments! I'll pass them on to Mum... I can't think of anyone I know that owns one for her to borrow. It's a shame you can't hire them!
bigmommasally
My mum is 73 and has played on our Wii. She has played tennis, golf, ski jump and jogging to name a few. The most hilarious though was watching her hula hopping I have it on video and would love to show you but I think she'd disown me if she found out! Your mum should go for it, at least exercising in her own home she can rest when she likes and won't feel pressured to keep up with a class. Janty
I think that's a brilliant idea. Gentle exercise that's fun and your Mum can sit down when she gets tired.
purple hen
My 79 yr old FIL spent all christmas day playing on the wii, the poor kids hardly got a look at it. On boxing day he telephoned to ask how the wii was!
emily95
My Grandma always wants to play on our Wii when she visits. She can't walk very well but she likes to play the games that you can play sat down. She like Wii Play best because nearly every one of the games on that you can play sat down. Hope this helps Emily xxx Edit to say that she's almost
Groovychook
Thanks so much for all your comments! Well, she didn't need much persuading in the end! We went off on a mission to Truro today and she bagged herself a Wii! We hunted high & low for the Wii fit but couldn't get it anywhere- seems to be in short supply. I think she's going to buy it online instead. Dad's excited too because he's found out that you can do boxing on it ! I was hoping that I'd be able to have a go on it next time I pop over but it doesn't seem like I'm going to get much of a look in!!
