Crikey if I had their size garden I'd have a couple of goats aswell! Lovely chooks. We don't spend as much time at mo with ours cause it's too cold out there! I cannot wait til the spring/summer comes, we love sitting on the arbour watching the chooks pottering around all afternoon.

Thanks for posting this. I love to see other people's chooks and hear about their experiences. Now I'm daydreaming about getting some of those pretty speckledy black and white ones - what variety are they, could someone tell me, and do they lay well?

You mean Speckledys or Cou Cou Marans...

 

 

 

They are Hybrids and lay around 260-280 dark brown (ish!) eggs a year. Lovely temperament and lovely colouring.

Our speckledy is a nightmare, not laying and not likely too either! had her nearly a year and she's only laid twice. Plus she's not at all tame. BUT she will run along and come with the others when called and she does follow us a little bit round the garden but only if she has the others with her for security. The most efficient layer we have is our faithful Rosie (Columbian Blacktail). Don't let us put you off though, our friends have 9 speckledys and they all lay normally every day.

Thanks guys, two different opinions there which is interesting. I guess that yours is a bit of a strange 'un, cluckbok, I wonder why she hasn't laid?

 

Loved the photo album, Tom. Summer days.... not long now.... well, I suppose at least the days are getting longer, even if it's minus 8 degrees at night and feels like it's minus 8 during the day as well.

We wonder when we got her that she was older than what the breeder said she was. We were quite inexperienced back then but now would know what to look out for. She had full headgear too when we got her. Just one of those things. We will be keeping her though couldn't bear to think of her going somewhere else and living a miserable life. She gets on well with the others too.

Having read the article, I wonder what egg production the man gets who feeds his flock with wild bird seed. I'm sure they love it, but do they get everything they need...?

I have a bigger garden than him, but I'm not allowed to have livestock due to a National Trust ( ) covenant. The farmer we bought the house from, and added some of the conditions, has said that we can have chooks, but I think a goat/pig/sheep might just be pushing the boundaries a bit!! I wish he'd sell us some of the field behind us so we could have a few more creatures and a better sized veggie bit

Yes, I wondered about the wild bird seed thing too. I would want to be sure that farmers don't use more or different pesticides on crops that possibly aren't intended for human consumption. Just a thought, and each to their own. It might be perfectly okay. But I think I'll stick to layers' pellets personally.
