Any thoughts on what to use under the roosting bars?

 

We're currently using shredded paper [from a shredding machine] is this OK?

 

I've heard sawdust is not such a good due to the dust, likewise straw.

You can use shredded paper, although it's not too good at soaking up any wet. Most of us use Aubiose, a shredded hemp horse bedding, which is excellent. You buy it in enormous bales and it lasts fro ages.

I swapped from shredded paper to Aubiose at the weekend and I LOVE IT!!!!

 

I always used to have to dump all the shredded paper from the tray and nestbox cos it all got a bit damp which meant the compost bin was getting filled with just paper more or less

 

However with Aubiose it soaks up the wet in lumps and I can just remove those and top up with a bit more Aubiose. The other thing that is good about Aubiose is that it composts quickly (so I am told) so i am chucking it onto the empty veg beds and into the composter.

 

Got a huge bale for £7.70 and it is going to last AGES as only have 3 girls (at the moment )

You can tip it straight into any trenches that you've dug in your veggie patch, or top up the compost heap. It's also brilliant for using in the run.

 

If your compost heap tends to be a bit wet, then layer the Aubiose/chook poo mix with the other stuff and it will dry out a bit.

Thanks - just need to track down a supply of the stuff then but sounds like I can use shredder paper for the being,.

I use sheets of newspaper, nice and easy to quickly bundle up in the mornings.

I use newspaper too and it goes straight into the compost bin with the poo and I use shredded paper on top of a sheet of newspaper in the nest box - again all goes into the compost bin. Its easy and cheap.
