The first egg of 2009, but...UPDATED

Recommended Posts

We didn't get to eat it.

I wondered why there was shredded newspaper in their run when I went out to feed them this afternoon, and then looked in the eglu. One of the bluebelles had laid an egg in the nextbox with a paper thin shell, obviously stepped back and broke it...they then ate it.:roll:

So, I've put some more grit in their feeders in the hope they'll lay some more eggs, with thicker shells next time!

Congratulations on the news about Scarlet

I've found that when the start laying eggs that the shells can be a bit thin occasionally, probably nothing to worry over. If you can get some Limestone flour next time you are buying feed this helps too. You can also add in a little Cod Liver Oil which helps with the absorption of the calcium (well the vitamin D in it does). You can get this (and the LF) from horsey type shops and its very reasonable. Don't use too much CLO as its not good for them in any quantity and it can make their eggs a bit fishy if you use too much. Just a teaspoon full once a week mixed into their feed would be fine.
