Hi

Is there anyway of knowing which chicken laid an egg?

 

I had my first egg this morning and haven't got a clue which chuck it came from. I don't suppose it matters really, it would just be nice to know!

Unless you know from the breed (check them out on Google) it's often a case of watching to see if you catch one in the act .

 

Once they're all laying it may be easier to work out by process of elimination!

I had no trouble knowing which of mine laid the first one due to watching her do it, well almost, However, she was also the one that was showing the most signs of coming into lay, very friendly, lots and LOTS of crouching etc. Any of your girls more approachable than the others?

Congratulations Its very difficult to tell unless of course their breed lays different coloured eggs. Normal colour egg layers tend to lay varying shades from day to day as well. Like the other posts the usual signs (unless you catch her on the nest of course) are red comb and wattle (and also C & Ws that have grown too), crouching (although some of my girls don't crouch for me). Lots more investigation in the nest area than the others. More appetite (as egg laying takes lots of energy). Plus she may have changed her voice as some become more vocal too.

 

Do you know how old they are roughly and are they the same age?

The one making the most noise, before and after! Like the above say just catch them at it or watch for the one showing the signs.
