managing chicken poo (esp if you are on your own)

Recommended Posts

So do most people clean the bars daily, how dirty do they tend to get?

I was planning of cleaning the pop trays dailing but forgot about the bars, I was thinking about cleaning them weekly.

Oh no  . Once a week only :D . I just push big poos :vom: off the bars when I let the girls out in the morning or collect eggs - it makes the weekly clean a bit easier!

I only empty the poo tray once a week too and give it a wash (although if it's not too bad I've been known to leave it another week  ).

Someone after my own heart- I was begining to feel as if I keep a very dirty eglu....!

Girls happy and healthy, husband and child happy for eggs but no more (child only 6 I suppose...) work part time, walk dog, garden, the list goes on. Life is too short for a daily clean as long as no diseases about

Got fed up of sliding about in the mud and risking breaking my neck, so spread some Nedzbed, about 2" deep, in my run today. My girls are as happy as pigs in s**t, scratching and kicking it about! It stops their treats (apple) getting mucked up, and I'm hoping it will make the daily poo picking easier too, being so absorbent. Wish I had done it weeks ago. Also installed a new perch for them today, so I guess they are feeling rather spoiled

No Actually Sue it's going to be green! the children and hubby ganged up on me :notalk:

It's being dlievered Monday, but to be honest we;ve had a few sety backs here so it wont be in place for a while after that.

I let my poop go to freecyclers, they fight for it!.:lol: I now have a list of about 5 people who want some more!

Freecyle chicken poo!? Great idea! Are they fussed if there is bedding in with it?

I have 4 hens and only clean the poop tray out once a week. i change all the straw in the nest box everyday and sweep up the droppings spilt food from the run every day. I have a thin layer of woodshaving in the run, it is concrete. I will try and remember to put newspaper in the poop tray next week. i have spare sets of roosting bars so wash disinfect and leave to dry weekly. i have a plastic dustbin which everything is put in and then once a month or when it is full it is taken down to the end of the garden and emptied on the compost heap.i seem to use a lot of wood shavings though and the dustbin contents get warm so must be starting to compost by themselves... I've had fifteen replies in five hours on my local Freecycle here in North London, and they're still coming now

Luckily we have a bottomless supply of the stuff

Caroline

I started collecting my girls poo in rubble sacks inside an old metal distbin with lid (to stop the whiff) yesterday ready for freecycling! :D My compost bin and veg beds had loads on already! :D

I'm a slattern too

I dont do poo picking or midweek cleans. they get emptied out once a week and cleaned thoroughly once a month.

I got an eglu to make it easier for myself not to become hostage to the thing.

I managed to offload 20 sacks to someone at the weekend. I still have some sat at the end of the garden so will get him to come and collect some more in a month. We have 4 compost bins and they are all full.

It'll ease up now I just have my ten girls and not the pooing maniacs that are meat birds

Oh and I might as well be on my own as they are my birds I have to do the work (until it comes to eating them or their eggs). DH did help me sort the leaking run roof today though

I use aubiose and they love it! they dont even mind some paper, just advertise it and see what happens, your email account will take off!..

My first appeal got 0 results. My second this one chap who'll take as much as possible so thats alright.

I wonder if its because I live in rurally though so there is plenty of poo to go round. (over half of playgroup live at stables or farms)
