But not for long I suspect. Came home from shopping with the three smallies to find ex-OH in the house saying he'd brought one of our hens back. Well, as they haven't free-ranged since Wednesday I was a bit surprised so went out to have a look and there was a lovely Buff Sussex girly, about 18 weeks old, standing at the back of the run with her head stuffed under the hay bale! He'd had a call from someone saying one of our hens was wandering around the farm land at the back of our house, couldn't get hold of me so went along, scooped her up, shoved her in the back of his van then brought her back and put her in the run. With a flock of 15 others! (I always knew he hadn't paid attention to which hens we had! ) Anyway, she's rather nice, a good weight for her size but I currently have all 15 big boys and girls free ranging so she can have a walk about and have something to eat and drink bearing in mind we don't know how long she's been out. She's having a fine time in a 20ft run all by herself helping herself to pellets and big scoop of corn care of my children!

 

It turns out we think we know where she's come from but we can't get hold of them so we may have a house guest overnight. Children want to keep her obviously I wouldn't mind, she's the same breed as Fred who we ate (no wonder she looks nervous!!) and is quite tame.

 

That's the thing about having lots of animals, you're always first port of call when anyone has a stray!

Well, my chicken of fate has gone. I ended up having to drop her off at the Hen and Chickens pub ( ) with ex so he could wait for her owner as I had to go out. She's one of only two apparently - she is Thelma and another (who I would hazard a guess is called Louise!) who has stayed in the run. The owner has no idea how she got out but was very grateful and is coming back with the cat basket tomorrow (and to have a look at our 17 ) And she was VERY surprised that a) she had laid an egg and b) that we managed to catch her.

 

So happy ending for Thelma and her friend who would have been a lonely chook

Damn..........just a day too late

Would have been able to take her off your hands.......(ok, wrestled) as I have a Buff Sussex 20 weeks old on her own with my four Omlet hens. I took her brother (Hector) back to the breeder yesteday and decided to put them all together last night in the cube for the first time Poachy would have loved a half sister. If I'd have known I'd have been straight down the Hen and Chickens and legged it across the ranges from Ligh"Ooops, word censored!"er.

What a lovely happy ending

 

PS. We hatched the two Buff Sussex, well, we didn't but our broody Flower did, from hatching eggs last September. Have an empty eglu now and looking to fill it!
