4m x 3m Omlet pen, cube, new auto door still boxed and coop light

My eglu arrived last week, but life being what it is, I didn't get round to putting it together until today.

 

I have to say that Eglu's 45 minute timing for putting the run together was very optimistic

It took me a good two hours of fiddling about!!

 

Anyway, the grass is soggy but not completely waterlogged, and so I moved my girls out of our conservatory (unheated for the last few weeks) and into the run. It was such a pleasure to see Do with a real live worm...running around in a frenzy and trying to make sure that Doodle didn't steal it.... ! Anyway, they happily pecked about in there all day, and by the time I'd picked up my son and got home after his drum lesson it was dark, and they had put themselves to bed..

 

It's quite clear down here in Sussex tonight, and I am now fretting that they won't be warm enough given their cosseted lifestyle up until now!... I've put loads more straw in the nesting box ...Should I worry? or will they be ok?... As I say they haven't had any heat in the conservatory for a few weeks but it is double glazed and therefore relatively draft free!

 

I'm sure I'm just fretting unnecessarily..... still so inexperienced.

The eglu is very well-insulated so I'm sure they'll be warm and cosy. Mine were fine in the eglu even during the recent -10 temperatures in Hampshire (although I did put some blankets over the top of it ) Everything is a worry when they are new

I only have 2 girls and sometimes I think they are freezing their wotsits off - the poo in the morning is sometimes frozen to the roosting bars

 

But they seem OK. I put a couple of blankets over at night too, on very cold nights

Don't worry Sadie they will be fine.

 

My lot are always fine in their eglu in the winter. I only shut their eglu door when I go to bed at night, so I usually end up padding down the garden after midnight. But I only close the door to stop them getting up too early and waking me, nothing to do with warmth at all.

 

Remember, they are wearing their own feather duvets.....

Thanks everyone...I am sure I worry too much...As I type this my son is telling me I am obsessing!!!! I will take your hint and put some blankets over before I go to bed tonight. Thanks again for the support, it really is very much appreciated

i was worrying about my ladies being too cold, but the omlet man said it was the heat in the eglu on hot nights that we need to be careful of. But yeh, its insulated and plus the chickens puff themselves up like giant footballs of feathers to help keep warm

Some (non-pampered ) chickens roost up trees all year round.....they're absolutely fine. The biggest worry is over-heating them......a perfect environment for bugs and beasties to thrive!

I've never bothered to cover my Eglus or cube with anything extra in draughty Yorkshire...and the hens have all been perfectly happy.
