Chicken Taste Buds

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

we picked up our 3 point of lay girlies on Saturday and I just wondered if it takes a while for their taste buds/appetite to develop?

They have all headed straight for the layers pellets from the moment they arrived and much those down but so far have shown a complete lack of interest in grapes/corn/broccoli etc. Is this just normal for new arrivals?

Should I lay off the treats until they are a bit older?

None of my lot like Broccoli and grapes took them a while to enjoy. Corn usually gets them going as does meal worms either dried or the wriggly ones. They may not have had any treats before - depends on how they have been raised. Its still early days yet so just try a little corn in the afternoons and see how it goes. They'll get the idea eventually. Plus keep an eye on any that they didn't eat as they might have it when you are not around if they are still a bit shy.

Good luck with your new girls.

Mine weren't interested in treats to begin with - not even corn. They very quickly got to like dried mealworms and spaghetti though and now it's quite difficult to find something they DON'T like! They're a bit like young children really - very suspicious of anything new, but if you keep trying, they'll soon cotton on. It just takes one to start eating something, then they all want it!
