Eglu - How much woodchip?

Recommended Posts

Hi

Finally managed to get some woodchip (as opposed to bark).

I have the standard eglu run. I have put down the matting stuff that you use in flowers beds and put woodchip on top.

I have used one 56 litre bag.

How much do you guys use? Is that enough?

I have bought hardwood chips. Anyone have any idea on average how long it is before the run will need cleaning out and the woodchip replaced?

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I was a bit generous and put 4 bags down so it was quite deep and they chucked it over the edge.

It lasted november until now but I do poo pick each week and water runs in from the surrounding slabs (they are all scewiff) so I take the soggy broken down stuff out a bit at a time. I've topped it up with more as I've gone along and am now trialling hemcore but the woodchip was good. Its easy to see the poo in and easy to rake over. I've got a cube so you'd need proportionately less.

:D:D

I used two and a half bags for a standard run plus 1m converter.

I also top up with several big double handfuls of Aubiose every week which soaks up damp

Its been down since early Oct and is just starting to break down a bit

The floor in the run is now about 4-5 inches deep so will need to be s"Ooops, word censored!"ed out and started again, I will seive the bedding though a sheet of wire mesh and put the big bits back in with fresh stuff - the small bits and Aubiose will go on the compost heap.

I make sure it's at least 2 inches deep and then top up every few months.

As above I only rake the run out once it reaches about 4 - 5 inches. I have a wood around the bottom to stop the girls kicking it out of the run.

I don't poo pick, the poo just seems to fall to the bottom of the run as I hardley ever see any. The run is on soil so maybe that makes a difference.
