bluekarin
Earlier this week one of my girls (Daisy) made this noise. I thought it was because her feet were cold. It was so loud my hubby could hear her when he was in the kitchen. Just now I heard that Moonshine is making the same noise. She and Daisy were looking through the trellis fence we have round our garden so I was wondering if she saw something. Or else her feet were cold now. Anyone elses chickens make these sort of noises? And does anyone know why?
Barkisland
She sounds normal to me. Mine do it when they are disgruntled about something.
abwsco
Snowball does that when she's laid an egg and quite often before as well but it's even louder. Could hear her at the front of the house the other week The bantam cockerel we could have come home with last week would have been quieter. mccroft
Honey used to do this if something was going on that they didn't like or if she was waiting to lay an egg. As she poked her head into the nesting area maybe another hen is taking her time.

Seagazer
Yes normal, a couple of mine do that when they have laid an egg so thankfully they are usually still in the nesting box so it sounds more muffled. My dog Cookie was listening to the clip and immediately stuck her head out of the cat flap, I think wondering, whats up with the chickens? She then stood up and looked out of the door window. Very funny I tried telling her it was on the lap top but she just ignored me
madchickenlady
Sounds like an egg announcement to me! Or, a 'I'm higher up the pecking order than you!' kind of show offy shout! One of my girls makes such a racket when she lays
chelsea
that sounds all too familiar to me! Could be interpreted as "egg announcement", "woah, see there's a cat", "that leaf just blew in the air", "what was that banging noise?" Chook n Boo Mum
that sounds all too familiar to me! Could be interpreted as "egg announcement", "woah, see there's a cat", "that leaf just blew in the air", "what was that banging noise?" That's how my chooks announce these too. Also means "I've lost my "sisters", where are they?" and "I'm one side of the gate & I'd like you to come & open it for me, as I'm too lazy to come back through the fence.....!" .........and I did !! My 3 labs have just thundered into the room all agitated "what's up, what's up? Do we need to help?" Sha x
Hen Watch
I get the ocassional egg anouncement like that but more often it happens in the summer when they were all queuing for the nestbox at the same time. Got so bad that I had to put in a makeshift nestbox made out of a casserole dish (yes really). But now it is winter they are laying less and I've not had it so much.
