Egluntyne
Impressive headgear for a 20 week old pullet.
Rosieglow
Oh I feel like such an idiot. Are you suggesting it's male or a much older female? The breeder assured me it was currently laying and was around 20 weeks. I must say, I am now learning he is not the most trustworthy individual. The Dogmother
That first one is definitely a boy - sorry Not quite so sure about the 2nd one though, I think it's a girl - the legs are a giveaway. They mature much later at this time of year, so it's easy to get confused.
Rosieglow
Has anyone got any idea how old my white sussex is from the pics I posted? I've only had it for 10 days, no eggs yet, and it has been sneezing constantly since the moment I got it. Have ordered some citricidal on the assumption it's just a cold. If she's been sneezing since you got her, then you really ought to inform the breeders. Keep an ear on her breathing to make sure that she doesn't have a chest infection. Rosieglow
To be honest I feel it is sounding a bit ho"Ooops, word censored!" and phlegmy when he/she breathes, and I was worried it might be passed onto my other chooks. I will contact the breeder tomorrow. Anyone any idea of the age, from the photos I've posted? I was told it was 20 weeks old (I have my doubts). feemcg
Rosieglow, I think your chook is a girl, and quite a mature hen at that........going by the legs, comb and wattles I'd say well over a year old, maybe into her 2nd or 3rd year ( the 2 pics are of the same chook aren't they?). When I first started with chooks I was sold 2 old girls by a supposedly reputable large breeder. I t wasnt till I got I bit more experience I realised i'd been 'had'
Rosieglow
Thanks for your help. I had my suspicions there was something not quite right. I'm very frustrated by the whole thing and I'd hoped I wouldn't have to deal with the breeder again as I felt he was rather un-sympathetic to the whole episode I had to deal with a couple of weeks ago, when one of my first chickens turned out to be a cockerel. I had no alternative but to return the cockerel to him (I live in a built up area) and exchange it for something else. I have now been given a sick old hen, not a POL. I would say that it is a mature female, looking at the legs and the not so pointy hackle feathers.
Jules.
This thread is really useful to me, as I'm hoping to hatch some light sussex eggs soon.
