Limestone Flour--Limping Chicken?

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I got 2 new hens however today I have realized that Dot has a limp. I have felt her foot, It is not hot or swollen at all so am thinking she just has a calcium deficiency?

I have read up about limestone flour but can't find where to buy it online, any ideas?

Thanks

Tom

We have 3 chooks and i give them about 5 days food in the feeder. How much LSF for that amount do you reckon? I've been putting about a tablespoon in. I also put a teaspoon of poultry spice in and i see that's 25% calcium. I don't want to OD them on calcium

PS this forum has some really good smillies

I give my two chicks a teaspoon of limestone flour and 1/2 teaspoon of poultry spice per day if that helps.

One of our ladies is very susceptible to calcium deficiencies, in fact she nearly died about 6 months ago before a very good vet suggested extra calcium. The other one isn't so sensitive so I guess some just have a weakness or something. She started the illness with a limp, then couldn't stand up, then diarrhoea and then very lethargic with hanging head. What was strange though was when I offered her food she refused it, but when I offered her bird grit she just lay down next to the bowl of it and kept eating and eating and eating it until I thought she would burst. They are so strange because they know instinctly what they need.

She is very healthy now and as long as she has limestone flour she is fine. If I miss it for a day or so, her eggs have weird bumpy bits on them and go very thin, so she must naturally have low calcium levels and needs to be given it daily.

Hope this helps.
