SAB
A red hen called Harriet is currently in SSPCA in Edinburgh (can be seen on http://www.scottishspca.org under "other animals"). There is also a goat.

Ain't Nobody Here
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear . And me getting a new walk in run and therefore will soon have an empty eglu run . Is this a chicken of fate I see before me ? Can I introduce just one hen though . Would I have to get another one too? And then I'd have too many for my eglu . But if I got an extra nestbox rigged up would that do? Oh help .
Guest
you could introduce just 1 hen but it might take longer than normal. She'll be able to sleep with the others at night okay I suspect, just seperate her during the day, give her a cat box to shelter/lay her eggs in in the spare run during the day? I'm sure you could work out a workable accommodation arrangement better than me. Make sure the others can see her so they get used to her being there and then after a week or so, try free ranging them together and see how it goes. JEAN
Let us know if you decide against it ANH and I will work on hubbie. Could quite fancy the goat aswell but I know how that conversation would go - he is terrified of goats... that said he was quite scared of the chickens at first too! Ain't Nobody Here
Jean, I'm not sure when/if I could take her anyway, so you go ahead and if you can't persuade your OH then I could see if I could take her .
SAB
Ooooooh is a happy ending in sight?!!
Vanessa
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear . And me getting a new walk in run and therefore will soon have an empty eglu run . Ain't Nobody Here
It's a long story but I'm in the middle of getting a quote from a joiner I know. I also have a quote from Aviaries4U. Delivery from them is nearly £100 so I'm hoping the joiner will be cheaper! If you're interested, you could have a look at this thread. JEAN
Jean, I'm not sure when/if I could take her anyway, so you go ahead and if you can't persuade your OH then I could see if I could take her . Casually mentioned the chook/goat plight to OH earlier. As predicted goat was a full, frank and complete NO. He is not keen on the chicken idea either as he thinks it would upset all of them and disrupt the pecking order and be a complete nightmare. Does he have a point? How hard would it be to integrate one into a gang of eight? We only have the one cube/run set up but they have free range access a fair amount of the time and I do have small dog travel boxe(s) available. The other issue is that we are based in Ayrshire and I'm not sure if they could bring the chook over to the Ayr SSPCA centre or if we would have to come over to Edinburgh to collect her - would this journey be a lot of stress on a chicken? Vanessa
Oh you might let me know his name as we are looking around at the minute as well. Also had a quote from Aviaries4u but its the delivery charge that puts us off.

One chicken is tricky to integrate but it has been done, it just takes alot longer. You could get another chicken on the same day, as long as they are both new, and the other new one is a full size POL girl, they should stick together as newbies. We only had one eglu when we introduced two girls to two others but managed it with the help of a cat box and some extra fencing. They don't need the taj mahal at first, just some separation until all is settled. Whether the journey will be too stressful on the chicken or not will depend on the health of the chicken. the SSPCA should be able to give you a better idea about that. good luck
Ain't Nobody Here
That's what I was worrying about too, Jean. I only have 3 but they are such a happy trio I'm nervous about introducing anybody else . I also thought I'd perhaps have to get yet another hen which would then mean my eglu wouldn't be big enough. I think it is do-able (with difficulty) for me but if you already have 8, you presumably have the accommodation, it's just the introduction that might be tricky. Let me know what the SSPCA say, if the journey really is too much for her I could have a rethink (I'm only about half an hour from them). SAB
I checked situation with SSPCA - Harriet appears to be in good health and regarded fit to travel. Anyone interested in her would have to go to the Edinburgh SSPCA and fill out rehoming questionnaire and pick her up from there. They advised that anyone interested should phone to check she is still there before setting off for the centre. I think they have had a bit of interest in her so hopefully she will have a home soon. Looking forward to any updates anyone has.

Kirstine
OH is dead keen, and we have quite good accommodation for an 'only' - we also have a gentle loner no-mates bantam who could go in with her. We'll give the SSPCA a call tomorrow - although she may already have a lovely home. Kirstine

Kirstine
There is someone going to look at Harriet today - if she is not rehomed, the SSPCA will give us a call. So it may be for us, but still for Harriet! Apparently she was found abandoned in a box outside a shop, poor mite. Kirstine
Ain't Nobody Here
As you say, good news for Harriet . (I still hope you get a call, though!) Apparently she was found abandoned in a box outside a shop, poor mite. How awful . Edited to say: Kirstine, have you seen this thread?
