How/what to feed them ?

Recommended Posts

I am a total complete novice so you'll have to excuse me!

Only a week til my cube and girls come (3 chickens). So i am getting everything ready and want to get my head around what they need.

I have some layers pellets coming from Omlet - do i serve these just by themselves dry refilling the grub every day?

I would also like to give them some garlic and bokashi - do i mix this in with the layers or seperatly and give every day?

Also have bought some grit and some oyster shell - how and when to give these?

Also some chicken tonic - what to do with this and when

Some apple cider vinegar - how often to add this to the water?

Lastly (I think) poultry spice!

Phew think I have too much!!! Or is there something i am missing?

Thanks

michelle

This is what I do, Michelle, others will do different!

OH half fills the grub every morning with dry pellets mixed as desribed below!

I would also like to give them some garlic and bokashi - do i mix this in with the layers or seperatly and give every day?

I keep the pellets in a big clear plastic box in the kitchen - I fill it a third with pellets, then add a couple of scoops of bokashi, a sprinkling of garlic powder & poultry spice, then repeat till full!

Also have bought some grit and some oyster shell - how and when to give these?

I have a small coop cup which attaches to the run. I keep this topped up at all times.

Also some chicken tonic - what to do with this and when

I don't use this. No reason, just never bought any!

Some apple cider vinegar - how often to add this to the water?

I keep an old sports juice bottle beside the pellets box and add a squirt to the glug each morning. I know some don't add it every day but we do.

Lastly (I think) poultry spice!

See above!

Hope that helps! You'll soon get into a routine which suits you (but I know it's daunting when you start out :anxious: ).

Yes, or refill as necessary. You dont need to discard uneaten ones unless they become damp.

Mix it with the pellets.

I don't bother with Oyster shell, but leave a pot full of grit from which they help themselves.

Also some chicken tonic - what to do with this and when

I add this every now and then to the water....as it takes my fancy. Nothing scientific.

Some apple cider vinegar - how often to add this to the water?

I add this most of the time. Ocassionally give them a week off.

Lastly (I think) poultry spice!

I add this if I thik they need a boost, such as during a moult.

Phew think I have too much!!! Or is there something i am missing?

Thanks

He he all your questions are the ones we all worry about.

What I do -

Only thing I mix with pellets is garlic powder otherwise they sort through it and it ends up on the floor like it did today because I mixed different brands of pellets. When I got them they got through a grub in a week, now it lasts them 2 days!!

I put mixed grit in a seperate pot and if their floor is clean I throw a handful down.

Don't use Bokashi, I would if I could find it locally but the postage is too much otherwise.

I dont use poultry spice but will when they moult, dont use tonic but might do, dont use apple cider vinegar but I will next week just need to buy some there is a recent thread giving a link to how to use it. I think its 25mls a litre for a week then just 2 days a week or low dose constantly.

:D:D

Only a week, you'll have load more questions then :D

That is all great - thank you.

I get it now (i think). I visited Quickcluck (kay) a couple of weeks ago and went through lots of this stuff but since then its gone a bit blurry!

I bought a couple of little cups to attach on to the run from flytesoffancy so will put the grit and shell in those and mix up their pellets with the garlic and bokashi as advised.

Water will have cider vinegar and other stuff added as and when!

Have bought some corn too for treats in the afternoon - that's the exciting bit!
