livvyshens
Did you mind them coming round, Steve? I find it quite comforting that they checkup. As I said I got a visit once and I did think what a cheek, but the guy was really nice and he just seemed to find the melee of animals and pets funny. We had a jack russell at the time who was totally besotted by him - leaping up and down on the sofa trying to lick him. Your place sounds fun but, as you say, pretty expensive to keep running. mark1971
hi all. this is my 1st post and im angry i have had 4 ex batts from steve myself to run with my own 3 hens (7 in total now) imho he is a genuine bloke who is collecting/treating/feeding/re-homing birds that would otherwise have what life? and then gets shot down on a public forum and grassed to the rspca by the likes of "pencilbeckett" who knows nothing about him.. at least the rspca know he is genuine now so he can carry on the good work RANT OVER lol hi all
Guest
this has already been discussed in this thread viewtopic.php?f=5&t=39966 The person concerned didn't make the phone call lightly as can be seen from the comments in this thread. I probably would have done the same if I had similar concerns. If the chicken purveyor in question is looking after their stock then they have nothing to be worried about! Accusing someone of "grassing" is out of order. If I suspected animals might be being exploited for profit or mistreated in any way, I'm not sure I'd want to visit the premises, I'd rather let trained inspectors to do it. "Ooops, word censored!"ody is "shooting him down" and pencilbeckett shouldn't be made to feel guilty for what they did, I would have done the same if I'd felt there was something not quite right. They did what they did out of concern not to be malicious so I support their intentions. I also think what Steve does is wonderful and it's been very heartening to find out about his work. I toatally agree with poet, pencilbeckett did what she thought was right in contacting the RSPCA as she suspected that the animals were not being treated very well, she was obviously wrong but at least we all now know that the owner of the farm is genuine and cares about the animals and isn't just doing it for money. I would of done exactly the same thing. I don't think that anybody should be calling anyone a grass as all she was doing was checking him out not getting him in trouble, if there was something bad going on then he would of been prosecuted but there wasn't and everything is fine. mark1971
sorry but thats the way i talk! om from the blak "Ooops, word censored!"ree an i do tork propa lol thats just the way i say words. SAB
who knows nothing about him.. at least the rspca know he is genuine now so he can carry on the good work Mark - the section I have quoted from you is very important - unlike you, none of us knew Steve or his work. In his case he is genuine and we now all know that due to RSPCA visit, but what if people didn't raise concerns simply because they did not know someone...? It is great that you wish to support Steve, but he does not need you to speak negatively of another person in order to "clear his name" - the RSPCA visit and the work he does has done that for him. Lesley
No need to delete it Mark - you've come on here to defend someone you've met personally and that is fine. As Poet said, the decision to make the phone call wasn't taken lightly but it was the right decision given the circumstances. You've explained why you said what you did - Steve has been and explained why he does what he does and all has been taken in good part. Welcome to the forum! tom123
I have not phoned the RSPCA today. My worries were that this man is rescueing hens and i am worried that if i call the RSPCA and he gets shut down then these hens will be sentenced to death anyway. I am now at a loss as to what to do. He said he is registered with the RSPCA so i wouldnt think if it all checked out he would lose his livelihood, it would only be if they found signs of cruelty surely, and if this was the case he would deserve to lose his livelihood anyway. How was she to know that you weren't genuine? you could of been just doing it for the money and being cruel? she wanted to make sure everything was OK and she is right in saying ...and if this was the case he would deserve to lose his livelihood anyway... Which is true. So I don't think she did anything wrong but she was just worried about the birds welfare. I really do not think that you should be telling her to think before she acts, if you read back through the thread you will see that she spent along time thinking it over and only rang the RSPCA just to make sure that you were genuine. Please don't come on here telling everyone that she did something wrong because she didn't, we all would of done the same thing and I am sure that you would of too. The 3 D's
I have to say, i agree with Tom aswell. She was only doing it for the welfare of the animals, as all of us care so much about them, we dont want to see anything bad happen to them. She thought along time about phoning the RSCPA so i dont think she rushed into phoning them, like you said. If that was me, i would have done the same. At least now, we all know that you treat your animals very well. Matt
fluffyknickers
I would do the exact same thing and phone the RSPCA if I wasn't sure. I am glad they found everything was just as it should be and I praise all the good work. We should think how wonderful it is that all these chickens are being well looked after AND what a great job the RSPCA are doing and they actually act on phonecalls and information. Personally, if anyone called the RSPCA to me as they were not sure how I was looking after my animals I would welcome them in and show them how well they are looked after and ask them to report back to the CARING person who called them. I am glad there are people out there who care about animal welfare - Steve does a super job but I am sure there are MANY out there who dont and without these checks they wouldnt be found. Must be a shock to have the RSPCA at your door but then very satisfying to show them round knowing how well they are all kept. Perhaps this should just have a line drawn under it now? mark1971
the way i see it.. she called rspca because she thought he sounded funny on a PHONE! HOW CAN YOU JUDGE SOMEONE LIKE THAT? dont get me wrong! if there was cruelty to animals then yes. BUT with evidence! she could of made a visit but NO.. if i see my neighbours having a few visitors i dont call the police to say theres sommat going on.. knock the door in???? it should not of been talked about on a public forum.. just think if steve said stuff it now i dont neeed the hassle? what happens to the birds then hey? i think its the impression it gives on other people! example: i heard the rspca raided him and there keeping a watch on him?? how would you think about him just from that said to you if you were looking for hens?? would you trade with him then? as said above..there should be a line drawn! we can go on for ages like this! i know i can.. by the way.. thanks for the welcome pmsl
