menagerie
Can anyone help - one of our chickens, (Belle, a Bluebelle) lays eggs which smell rather weird - a kind of fishy/chickeny smell when raw and slightly when cooked. None of the other hens, which eat the same things, has ever had this problem. She's only been laying since Jan and as far as we can tell has always had this problem. Is it a problem? Has anyone else ever had this? She came vaccinated. The eggs taste OK and we've not had any ill effects from eating them. Many thanks!!! AJuff
One of our hens used to have this problem too. I worked out that where we kept the eggs was too close to food preparation area and as far as I could tell her eggs absorbed more kitchen smells. Moving the eggs has stopped this problem. Someone sent me this link which was interesting. http://www.thepoultrysite.com/publications/1/egg-quality-handbook/36/off-odours-and-flavours
menagerie
Thanks for the info. I'm not sure it's the cooking smells as they don't seem to get worse the longer they're stored. Possibly she may be one of the ones referred to who persistently lays weird smelling eggs - and therefore should be culled!!!!???? Not likely, she is a very pretty chicken, of excellent character! Perhaps I'll try storing them differently and seeing if that makes a difference.
