Egluntyne
It will make you popular with your neighbours! Have you considered the crowing from dawn to dusk? It is possible, but he would have to run with the girls for a while for a realistic chance of success, which might put a strain on your relationship with next door. I think I'd be more inclined , in an urban setting, to pop some fertile eggs (from ebay, or Jody at Raw Green Cottages) under one of your girls if she goes broody....or buy an incubator and brooder. You would also need separate accommodation for the broody hen plus chicks .....or for the incubator hatched chicks when they come out of the brooder. Plus a plan for any unwanted cockerels that result.
Electricbarbarella
just a thought, definalty not if we would have to keep him a while, my girls got into the neighbours garden yesterday, luckily she loves them, not sure the same would be said for a cockrel. hatching is probably next years project to be honest, I just like planning things. Snowy
The other thing to consider is that your hybrids are bred from stock selected for their laying ability. Depending on the breeding of your cockerel, you could end up with a mixed bag of heinz 57 chooks that could not be sexed at hatching. It is unlikely that males could be rehomed as they would not be purebreeds and you would have to wait until they are mature to sex them and then dispatch them. You would also not be able to guarentee how well the hens would lay. Don't want to put you off completely, just food for thought
