arwenskye
my daughter just noticed that one of our hens has vlood on her foot-I'm not sure if she has scratched something sharp or got attacked by a cat, do I need to do anything other than wash it? Christian
I would wash it with salty water to get it really clean and check for any damage. Is it the claw or the soft pad of the foot?, sometimes the claw will bleed if it has been caught on something. Dragging it through a bar of soap stems the bleeding and it should heal. I would check again tomorrow and wash again as necessary to clean it up. You can use diluted tea tree oil as that is antiseptic. Maybe take her out when she has gone to bed to get a proper look. Savlon or any antiseptic cream will be fine, then pop her back in to roost. Hope she is better soon. Will move this to the chicken clinic
chelsea
I agree with Christian, bathing the foot in a diluted tea tree water or salt water solution to clean the wound will be fine and then popping either some vaseline (to stem the bleeding) or savlon on the cut will help. I would maybe bathe it for the next few days just to prevent infection. It should be fine. If it gives you cause for concern/still bleeds or looks worrying maybe give the vet a ring. arwenskye
thanks, I checked her when I got home from work yesterday and she seemed to be fine again! I'm keeping an eye on it! and will bathe again if necessary, she is still laying beautiful eggs though and eating plenty-just standing on 1 leg but walking ok
