fluffyknickers
Just got in from the vets. I found it quite interesting actually! I wanted to go just to register there and get them the once over to check all ok and I wanted to ask about mites and worming. He was very nice and well used to chickens and said "We have never seen so many chickens as pets here as we have in the last 12 months, or actually in the whole of my career"!!! He said it was interesting now people were spending money (like I was!) on their chickens getting them to the vets etc when in previous times it was just disposed of if something was wrong but now people treat them more as pets. While I was there they were wormed, I am pleased as was one of the jobs I was pondering about and having to buy the worming stuff etc. He used something called something like Panacor (I cant remember as was on my own with a 4 year old a two year old an three chickens!). He said that I can just come again in a few months or when/if I see worms. I asked how long it lasts and he explained that it just lasts til the next time they get them and it will just kill any worms they had IF they had them. I asked about Mites and he said he wont treat them with anything injectable until I see them then they can be treated and said to keep doing what I am doing with the Diatom. He also checked each one all over and said they were in a good condition - which has just put my mind at rest. He said he has had a few of ex batts in recently in a sad condition and trying to sort them out. And the cost for all three to be checked and wormed....£18. I dont know how much a load of flubenvet is and I know I could probably get the worming stuff to last ages for that but for the three to be checked and wormed for £6 each for me is worth it. ALSO may be of interest to you that he said Flubenvet are soon to be supplying it in smaller amounts for poultry/birds and he is waiting for it to come in - so may be better for us chicken owners. Thanks for reading Michelle
Hen Watch
Glad to hear you have found a good vet who "does" chickens, they can be hard to find. ALSO may be of interest to you that he said Flubenvet are soon to be supplying it in smaller amounts for poultry/birds and he is waiting for it to come in - so may be better for us chicken owners. Yes, they do a 60g (1%) pack but be warned it can be the same price (or more expensive) than the 240g (2.5%) pack that I have.
PeckyBeak
Have just bought the small Flubenvet medicated premixture 60g tub from SPR Centre.com for just over £17.00 + postage. You mix 6g with 2KG of feed. Two points -on reading the 'Sticky' on the Forum re this product, it suggests that for gapeworm/lungworm a double dose would be required, but the info on SPR's site and also on the pack says that it is effective against this, no extra amount indicated. Not sure if this is because it is a premixture but that sounds an improvement. Other point, on looking further on their site, there is now available a 20KG bag of Layers Pellets with Flubenvet already mixed in at the appropriate dosage. £10.50. You feed the chooks this for the seven days. Much easier than all the mixing with the mash. Quite a big bag, probably better for those of you that have lots of chooks but assuming you worm three times a year. and if stored right should keep? Why didn't I see that before I ordered the other.
