Who has got frog spawn?

Recommended Posts

Hello

Not much sign of frog activity this morning....must be the drop in temperature.

We had the first frogs in our ponds a week ago and by Thursday we had spawn.

Yesterday we counted over 70 frogs just in one pond and only had to guess how many others were under the surface.

Since we lost all the fish to the local heron population the frogs have returned in greater numbers each year, although I agree with others who have posted that this year they have appeared later than usual.

Speaking of herons, two flew over the garden when the chooks were out of the run last week. Top chook saw them as a threat and sent an alarm call to the others and they all hid in the shrubbery for about 10 minutes. Later in the day the same chook gave out the alarm, but I couldn't see any herons. This time she'd spotted a buzzard !

Great eyesight these birds have :o

Regards,

Christine

First appeared about 10 days ago and there is loads this year for some reason. Friend nearby has none, she was told that female frogs overwinter in the water - her shallow pond totally frooze and there were some dead frogs when it thawed. :(

Is it legal to move frog spawn from one pond to another when it's not from the wild?

Actually it's the other way around - the males tend to stick around the pond and the girlies go off and hibernate elsewhere, only returning to the pond to mate, then they go off again.

As regards moving frogspawn, it's not illegal but not advised unless the spawn is in specific danger. Selling it is illegal though.
