redsky
After thinking about keeping chickens for years, I finally took the plunge. The girls settled in okay, but I did have a bit of a panic when transferring them into the new hen house. Geraldine made a run for it and managed to vault 6ft over a neighbouring fence!!! Is this normal - the hens are both 15 weeks old and I assumed that the wings had been clipped. Would an unclipped hen be able to jump to high? (She was flapping her wings a bit too and seemed to easily clear the fence. quickcluck
It all looks lovely you must be really pleased... As for your escaping chook, sounds like a bit of wing clipping is called for
Egluntyne
Lovely pics. The dog looks as if he is operating that handle thingy. It sounds as if those wings are unclipped. Don't forget to do just the one wing as it will unbalance them.

Seagazer
Great photos and your puppy is just gorgeous. Well trained as well, you could have a lay in and just get the dog to sort the chickens out

Barkisland
Oh wow! That is just an overdose of cuteness, I will now have to go and lie down for a bit I so wish I could have a dog, but my OH hates them . Fortunately, he is OK with chickens... mostin
Lovely photos, news girls and a puppy . Definitely a wing clipping is in order. They can still be very flightly until they start laying and put abit of weight on, then they settle down.
Hen Watch
What a pretty hen house. Mine were more flighty when young but now are so fat and old they can't be bothered to clear the 4ft Omlet fencing..... I did clip one wing, easier than you think. There is an Omlet guide on it. Have a look at the picture on this link and a good guide is to cut the first 6-7 feathers back as far as the tips of the next line of feathers. http://www.backyardchickens.com/LC-wingclipping.html
