vetty82
Hubby is about to sprinkle down some grass seed. The girls are in their run and will be until around lunch time. IS grass seed ok to put down? It wont harm them if the eat a bit will it? It's just Wilkos hardwearing grass seed - nothing special! TIA xx
C&T
Personally I would fence it off some how if you are able to. Not worried about it harming them, worried that you won't have any grass seed left, and your carefully prepared soil will be flicked all over the place??? We laid some new turf yesterday (a small area, 4m2 so easier for us to lay turf) but have netted that area off to give the grass a chance to establish before the feathered fiends start scratching at it!! debbie26pet
it would be easier if u net a area of, we put seed down and the girls came out next day, we thought it would settle in, it did nothing, so we have netter a area of and put seed down and now i have grass and its coming back so green. before after this is just after a week im really pleased, asda own grass seed def recomend it, and a roll of b and q wire and some sticks, cost us about £30 to do is and im pleased
Plum
I was thinking 'would they notice' but guess you're right it needs protecting, especially when those little green shoots come up.
Kirstine
I agree, you need to worry much more about the grass than the chickens!
cluckbok
We put grass seed down last year, it was blue coloured seed to deter birds. Apparently birds do not identify blue as being food. We didn't have a problem and our grass grew lush. We didn't fence it off either it was pet safe stuff.
Kirstine
That's interesting, I'll look out for the blue stuff - we have some mole activity we'd like to repair, but the chickens keep dustbathing in the hills and eating the grass seed! Our rat poison is also blue, although we are very careful to put it down where the chickens can't get it, it's good to know that if there was an incident (rats moving it about etc.) the colour might deter the chickens from investigating too closely. Aggienator
Apparently birds do not identify blue as being food. Could someone please explain this to Flo? Then she might leave my blue pansies alone
vetty82
Thanks guys - you've all been a great help. Just checked the 'poorly' bit of lawn and it seems there are some green shoots showing through already without the grass seed so hopefully it might recover. The chickens seem more taken with being nosy round the rest of the lawn so maybe they might leave it be. Thanks again. xx

I'd love to try and grow some new grass and as our birds still free range from dawn till dusk this stuff may be ideal. Thanks Suzy
