Gallina
I have always imagined saddles for hens to be quite complicated expensive affairs, but I have just learned that you can make your own out of canvas: http://www.thepoultrysite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3876&page=2 I am posting this because I wish I had known this when I had a cockerel. He damaged the back of his sister rather badly, and although there is no longer any sign of blood the surface of the hole is lower than the surrounding skin, and I don't think it will ever grow feathers again. Hands up everyone who thought a hen saddle was made of leather -- I hope I am not the only one.
The Dogmother
I've seen orpington saddles in use and they are made of canvas, in fact I once saw some made in pretty chintz, if you liek that sort of thing!
Mazzarina
I must admit I didn't even know such things existed - and am now imagining a chicken version of the Cheltenham gold cup... A wave to fellow Oxfordshire chicken-owners, by the way!
The Dogmother
*waves back* roughly whereabouts are you located Mazzarina? They can prevent some really quite serious injuries

Mazzarina
I'm in Eynsham, Claret. My poor, tolerant OH knows it's dangerous to go on trips in your neck of the woods, as I tend to insist that we drop in on Cotswold Chickens to stock up on 'essentials'. Only a matter of time before I leave with another set of chickens under each arm...
The Dogmother
Ahh, I'm over that direction sometimes, I'll give you a shout next time. I used to work in Eynsham.
Egluntyne
Only a matter of time before I leave with another set of chickens under each arm... The are classified as essentials here,.
Mazzarina
Good stuff, Claret - or perhaps I'll bump into you soon at CC next time I'm on one of my 'essentials' forays. Must not set off with a cardboard box full of holes, must not...
The Dogmother
Not to worry, we have plenty of boxes at the yard!
