NatalieC
Its Laverne again!! She hasn't laid properly for some weeks now and is otherwise perfectly happy and healthy looking (she's certainly her usual delinquent self). She lays every other day but lays two soft shelled eggs - I've tried the Davinova C and it doesn't seem to make any difference. Shirley is still laying perfectly normally and they both have the same diet (I'm strict with the treats to make sure they eat their pellets). She nearly two and a half - is she just worn out laying? Laverne is my chook who used to smash her own eggs and we managed to sort that out eventually!
Egluntyne
Maybe she needs some Vit D3 to metabolise the calcium. Cod liver oil added to her pellets ( just a dollop) or some Zolcal D might do the trick.

NatalieC
Will try those out and see how it goes. However, just to confuse matters further, this morning there was a soft shelled egg and hidden under the newspaper I've been putting in the bottom of the nesting box to make it easier to clean out (softies are messy!) was one perfect Laverne egg. I'm beginning to wonder if she has gone back to the smashing habit after all and is laying every other day one softy and one normal one but is breaking the good one. When she saw me with the good egg in my hand she went bonkers as if I had a treat for her - I almost had to run away from her becuase she was trying to jump up! If that is that case, I don't fancy my chances of breaking the smashing habit as she just seems to revert to that behaviour for no apparent reason - it'll be back out with the golf balls!
