thechickenkeeper
hi there omleteers, I was under the impression, dont know where I got it from, that once a hens starts to lay that is the size of the egg it lays, so on that point, will a hens eggs get bigger as she grows older and bigger herself? reason I ask is our Minorca is laying small eggs, and everywhere I read, it says the Minorca has the biggest white eggs of any breed. So what's the jury say?

Olly
Yes, mine gradually got bigger. But that's the gingernuts - my speckledy hen is enormous, and she lays the smallest eggs! so it may depend on the hen.
noyan
yes they do get bigger. Amber started laying 44gram eggs now up to 62 grams this is over 33 days, at one everyday. the last 8 have been 58 to 62 grms. my others have all now started laying all seemed to start with 44 grams but only been laying for just over a week. but are gradually getting bigger. Hen Watch
My Omlet hybrids started out with tiny 50g eggs which just got bigger and bigger as the months progressed. A "normal" egg is now 75g (which would be classes as Very Large by supermarket weight standards). Even had one over 100g once (but only once.....) TAJ
Yes they do get bigger and books tell you that in the 2nd year the number of eggs is less but the total weight of the eggs is around the same as the first year. Tracy
Valkyrie
I have noticed that ours are slightly bigger than when they first started, although Cheyennes have always been large. But after they have a day off so to speak, the first one is much bigger and then each egg laid after that gets smaller - I can tell because they go through the holes in my pretty egg holder - nothing normal happens here!
