I have landed!

Recommended Posts

:cry: Gutted. Have just been to the field with lengths of string. Got home and measured up and worked out a rough estimate of how big the land is. I think its about 1/4 of an acre :cry: . Most of the recomendations say 6 alpacas per acre. That means for 1/4 I would only be able to have 1.5 alpacas. Its not a regular shape, so its hard to be exact. I don't mind if we just have 2. But I'll be gutted if its too small. I have read other places say up to 8 per acre. So that would mean 2 would be ok on 1/4 acre. But I dont want them to be squashed, or not happy.

I am so disapointed. I've been  . But then I remembered all the posts on here and how  people are. So if I can only have 2 alpacas then I'm hugely lucky. And if we have to go to the other field we were offered, then its not so good, but I'm still hugely lucky.

The course is tomorow so Iwill ask them their opinion. From the contact I've had already, I trust them to give me good advice.

HI guys.

Cooperwife; thanks for that link, I hadn't come across that web page on my searches before. I'll have a look.

Well, the course was quite hard work actually! It was good, lots of theory and not as much hands on stuff as I would have liked. But I enjoyed the day and am very enthused about learning to spin. We spent so much time thinking/learning/reading about/ looking at fleeces and the amount of "crimp" that I was seeing "crimp" in everything all evening! A piece of string...... a young girls hair...... everything was being rated for its quality as an alpaca fleece!!!!!

Spoke to them about the land and they said it wasn't big enough  . Thank goodness OH got us to hold back on handing over cash to him the day before (I was going to!).

We went to talk to the other lady (20 mins from home) and she's still up for renting us some land :D . I have to keep reminding myself...... its not ideal, but its what I've got and I'm very very lucky to be able to be even thinking about doing this!

Loved being a bit more hands on with the alpacas :D . I never knew they had such a lovely smell! They smell of damp biscuits  and they make such a nice noise.... hummmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Saw some lovely lads who we would like to buy! One white and two medium fawn coloured!

Glad you had a good day on the course. Sorry the field isn't big enough  . I can't believe K managed to hold you back from handing over the cash  , did she hit you over the head or something  .

Just remember that fate will find a way, your field is out there somewhere and just waiting for you to find it, so just rent this one that "will do" in the mean time.

mmmmmmmmmmm smelling of damp biscuits, you'll never stop me sniffing them  .

Is that damp biscuits after they have been in the tea?

Did you learn about how to look after them as well as spin them? Why boys are they easier to manage? If you had a girl you could have likkle ikkle alpacas.

Do they have cloven feet? :?:D

 I dont dunk, so damp biscuits which have just had a bit of rain dropped on them and they have swelled up ever so slightly and are a bit musty biscuitey. You will have to come and smell for yourself plum  .

Gledings are easier because their dietry needs are much simpler than the females (who spend virutally their whole lives pregnant). Geldings dont have power struggles like femals and stud males do. They also poo in neat little piles (called middens) unlike the females who poo anywhere. They are also a fraction of the price of other alpacas.

If we get on ok with them, we may well invest in a female in a year or two and have a little baby! How exciting would that be? As if this isnt exciting enough to nearly make me explode at regular intervals :lol:

K didn't need to hit me over the head, I am wise enough to know how wise she is  and how daft I can be when I'm getting too HENthusiastic :lol:

Negotiations over land going well! Hoping to see her and firm things up tomorow :D
