Table Bird Breeds we've tried.....

Recommended Posts

We've been to collect our day old chicks from PD Hook near Oxford today. I can highly recommend them. The chicks are in excellent condition and are really lively.

We were really welcomed by the hatchery staff. I felt a little silly going to a big hatchery for a few chicks but I needn't have worried. They were really pleasant and interested in what we were doing.

We had ordered 6, 3 Cotswold Whites and 3 Cotswold Golds. Someone in the hatchery can't count as we ended up with 8! At £6 for all of them who am I to complain?

We also managed to sneek in some older table birds from Jude at Cotswold chickens on the way home....well we have an empty eglu. It would be wrong not to.

I will be interested to hear how you get on with them - we had 6 from them in the winter - a mixture to try - the broiler ones just grew so fast, the freeranging cotswold were better, but still pretty fast growing. We use to live 1 mile from P.D.Hooks - like you I felt getting 6 from a firm that takes out 80,000 in a delivery lorry was a bit small scale, but they were very happy to serve us - when we got them they ranged from 65p to 90p each depending on the breed and sex, we paid £4.50 I think for 6.

Forrest Gump has won a reprieve! A friend said she was looking for a Light Sussex cockerel to replace one of her boys who got a bit too aggressive. So Forrest is packing his suitcase in preparation for entertaining a whole host of ladies on a smallholding in Kent

So, no more chicken dinners for a while yet. The Dorking lads are ten weeks old. I don't know wether to try rehoming the Orpington lads. Has anyone ever eaten one?

When OH did the dispatch course with Alison he came home with a fully boned buff orp boy - it tasted fine.

Due to circumstances beyond my control tomorrow I might go to P D Hooks and buy some day olds. We had a power cut last Thursday, for almost five hours. I knew the eggs in the incubator would be doomed, it was just too long  They were due yesterday. I'd started off with 12 Salmon Faverolles. 6 were clear, 1 looked a bit iffy but the others were doing well up until then. One hatched yesterday and is absolutely fine. One egg is still cheeping but it hasn't pipped. Nothing from the others :?

Little Sausage is now in the brooder, thoroughly miserable on it's own with just a teddy for company. I'll make a few phonecalls in the morning but if I can't find any day olds locally I'll bite the bullet and buy a few Cotswold golds & whites to keep Sausage company. Even if this other egg does hatch I'll still want a couple more because if one died I'd be left with a lone chick.
