chicken poop :)

Recommended Posts

Happy Easter :)

I just wondered what everyone does with their chicken poop? I have been raking up the excess woodchip and my girl's poop from the part of the lawn where they freerange every couple of weeks and popping it on the composter.

I also put their poop from the eglu tray andn the straw in the composter with bits and pieces of kitchen waste to help the composting process.

Howeverrrrrrrrrrrrrr, I've run out of room in my composter (and have used lots for the garden so now have to wait another darn year!!!!) and now don't know what to do with the excess poop/woodchip :( I've put some on the garden as well but don't want to do this anymore as we have a small garden and i don't want it to smell for the summer :(

I was thinking of getting a green bin for the council to collect and putting it in there but have just read that they don't take "pet litter" of any sort. What to do with the poo??????

What do other people do?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Do you mean the poo in the eglu tray? I was told to use sawdust in the base of that - should i just use nothing so i can collect just poo? blimey, what a question! sorry to sound so naieve....still find myself being "new" to this chicken keeping lark 6 months down the line!!!!!

do people just put poo straight on the garden?

Re the full composter. Don't forget to keep it damp (use a watering can if necessary), put some vegetable matter in as well as poo to even up the balance, and stir it every now & then, it should then settle enough for you to put new material on top.

I put mine in the composter, but I use Aubiose, which composts very well.

My bin is full too so I give it to my mum and her elderly neighbours as they all have compost bins on the go. They were really pleased with the offer.

I put a sheet of newspaper in the bottom of my poo tray then tip the whole lot into a bag. Sometimes the girsl shred it for me by pulling it up through the bars. I'm sure they must stand on their heads to reach it.
